Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY - News & Discussion Thread

It felt more well-rounded and never was I bored during the movie. Mike Faist deserved the nomination more so than Jesse Plemons did. He had more to do and the role was more complex and difficult. I don't think Rachel was robbed of an Oscar. She was good but not as good as those who were nominat

West Side Storysuffers from its perception as a remake that bombed at the box office, even though most of its competitors drew fewer people to theaters in the middle of an Omicron wave."

That!
“A remake the world didn’t need” it’s the general consensus amongst voting members hence the snubbing at most awards. They are of a certain generation who is attached to an iconic film that won 10 academy awards and refuse to take another version on board no matter how good it is. Also the fact that screeners either arrived too late or never therefore most members had already cast their votes, didn’t help either.

Those issues were discussed in a recent YouTube video I watched about Oscar Predictions with film critics that know the industry.
I also personally believe a major blunter was made  by deciding not to release the film on streaming platforms. I get what Spielberg is saying about the Cinematic experience (fully agree) but good luck convincing the audience (especially the age group for this film) during the pandemic to go and see it. I mean the ones who truly want to experience it in the theatre will do no matter what. Dune was released on streaming and although I could have watched it on my 50 inch TV I refused to. I went straight for the IMAX experience and wouldn’t have jt any other way. Same happened for WSS, watched it 3 times already in theatres.

Adding on top the BO failure and WSS is destined to be remembered as a failed remake (in both sales and awards recognition) that no one will talk about in 10-20 years from now. It breaks my heart but it is what it is.

Sadly I don’t see WSS wining any Oscars other than for Ariana DeBose.

It is truly heartbreaking to see this given how much the film is loved in the musical world and in this forum but the honest truth is it hasn’t shaken the water hard enough to get the critical recognition it deserves , especially when it has stiff competition from: The Power Of The Dog, Dune, Belfast, Licorice Pizza, King Richard etc. Especially the first two choices cover most media’s and criti

Came back last night from a 3rd, and what it appears to be a final, watch on the big screen. They are pulling it down from all the theatres on Wednesday here in the UK.

This film only gets better with every single watch.
I keep discovering new things on the dialogue, choreography, characters’ backstory, admire more and more Spielberg’s incredible camera work.

Even Ansel’s bad performance in some segments doesn’t feel that bad to me anymore. I haven’t been obsessed with a film like that in a very very long time.

Thank you Steven!

He was compelling from the start and sold the complex dynamic between Riff and Tony, helping Ansel Elgort's performance be better than it would have been otherwise.

He gets occasional mentions and seems to be viewed as a longshot candidate.

I decided to go for a second viewing last night for a chance to see if it gets better. And yes it does!!

For some reason I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I was more into the dancing numbers, the singing, more into the dialogue, more into the characters’ emotions,  paid attention to more details in the production and finally I was able to “forgive” more of Ansel’s miscasting. He wasn’t that bad actually and compared to Beymer miles better

He tells me he loved ''West Side Story'' and voted it for Best Ensemble, and was shocked it wasn't one of the nominees.

As a few journalists have reported since the announcement, it appears ''West Side Story'' had a screener issue. Before the SAG nominations came out, I heard som

Spielberg establishes early on in the film that the Latins are aware of things happening outside: the old and young Maria looking outside their windows during “Maria” and all the Latin ladies poking their heads out of their windows during the start of “America.” 2 gunshots in the dead of night would definitely awaken many. I felt he did really good  to ok in most occasions, definitely a lot better than Beymer. The only thing that was a complete failure was the ending. His reaction to Maria’s news was laughable at best. It felt so cartoonish and rushed. That’s the film’s only real weakness and I am su

I’m so heartbroken that history will forever label this movie a bomb. It was made at the wrong time. I truly believe it would’ve done well had it not been for the pandemic. I believe time will be kind to it, and once it’s released on streaming, more people will sing its praises. I hope the Oscars will be kind to it as well. I feel confident it will get a Best Picture nomination for sure."

I fully share your dismay, it is unfair for such a great film and effort to receive such a poor public attention and pushed aside when other mediocre projects thrive like there’s no tomorrow (cough* cough* Spider-Man).

I wish it could win loads of Oscars to at least solidify its reputation in another way but high unlikely, the competition is stiff. I can see it getting for supporting actress (Ariana DeBose), Costumes and maybe maybe Cinematography for Kaminski (although it will either go to Dune or Power of The Dog). As far as best director that will go to Jane Campion for The Power of The Dog. Power of the Dog will also win best picture this year, very very likely. Unfortunately it doesn’t look that promising for WSS

The majority of those people have probably never even seen the 1961 version or at least don't actually care about it. They're likely not even musical fans. They just want to get online and make nonsensical comments about stuff they know nothing about."

the internet and social media is full of those on the film.

The most popular negative insult for the film in the general comments is:

“Go Woke, go broke.”

But It also infuriates me beyond belief when I read people’s condescending and ignorant comments on social media about how wrong it was to remake WSS, since the 1961 is “absolutely perfect”and most of them won’t watch it because of that reason alone. Many even say: “would you remake Jaws or Citizen Kane or Gone With The Wind etc?!” smh!!

And no matter how hard you’re trying to convince them that this is NOT a remake of the 1961 film but another adaptation from Lawrence’s book and the 1957 Broadway stage play, that everything is different from the casting to the choreography to the musical arrangement, the lyrics, the screenplay, character background story, dancing sequence etc; that all musicals and plays can be and have been readapted on film, well they just don’t take it. They still see it as an unnecessary remake on a classic that is considered blasphemous to even touch it.

I am wondering, did the audience had the same resentful reaction when film re adaptations of Phantom Of The Opera, Les Miserables, Beauty And The Beast, Romeo And Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Pinocchio, Cyrano, Hamlet, Merchant of Venice and other similar stage musicals and plays came out?

Note: noticed last week that another adaptation of Cyrano is out, I haven’t seen anyone bitching about that yet.
