Looks very... modern.
Still not convinced we need a remake. Especially not one with Elgort.

Modern? Nope.
It looks the exact opposite of modern, actually.

Photographically, in these stills, yes it does. We will see when we get a trailer on whether that still rings true through footage. I hope or wish the film was shot on film rather than digital, but looking forward to this nonetheless.

It's period look feels forced to me. It doesn't feel natural.
Also, I agree above. The stills look digital. They should've opted for film to give it a more authentically period look.

Maybe we just have different definitions for "modern."
I have no doubt that the period will feel somewhat forced. I sometimes have problems with Janusz Kaminski's cinematography in Spielberg's films. To me, the lighting is too bright, the colors are washed out, and any period looks inauthentic. Hoping WSS is an exception.

I'm skeptical of Elgort as well (we haven't heard him sing that I know of, and I don't think the slicked back hair really suits him. Also he just looks SO much older than Rachel Zegler it's kind of jarring), but I'm excited to see what this production will bring with the updated book and all.

Lovely pics! Pretty sure the apocalypse will hit by December, so I'm glad we at least got proof it was actually made.

Ansel is an amazing singer, love watching his videos. This looks perfect. The stunning men and women, the colors, costumes, just the whole feel of it. This is how West Side Story should look, and I'm really looking forward to sitting in a big room with musical theater lovers everywhere and collectively enjoying this film. Cannot wait.
Thanks, Jacob.

I agree. My first thought was that this was not going to be a modern remake.

Posted: 3/16/20 at 12:59pmI think it looks really great. It’s pretty reminiscent of the ‘61 film, just with people who aren’t wearing brown face paint this time.

Ansel’s singing voice isn’t a mystery. He’s sung on talk shows, social media, etc.

Sorry I should've said "sing in a musical theater context", though I hadn't seen that video before so thanks!

I love the energy and vibrancy of colors, especially in that America still. I don't think colors have to be drab to exude a "realness" to the film. It is a musical after all

Spielberg always shoots on 35mm film.
