Well, at least the producers won’t have to worry how reviews affect the way the show sells given that it’s practically sold out. I agree with the poster who said that it’s probably smart to try and get high profile cast shows as early as possible. Better seats for a better price and maybe one can even use a coupon code. And if you get ticket protection, you can always change your mind if the show turns out to be a stinker.

I saw the show tonight and found it to be lethargic. It lacked suspense and the acting and direction was not very good. The production needed a more charismatic actor to play the psychopathic lead. Some of the actors were guilty of TV acting so their performances did not translate past the first row. There was a considerable amount of smoking that permeated through out the audience where there seemed to be a lack of ventilation. I found it to be unwarranted.

If the cast had been singing original material some folks might have been less critical. Extraordinary voices have sung Try To Remember over the years from Frank Sinatra to Julie Andrews to Perry Como. And there has always been a particular fondness for Jerry Orbach. I have never been convinced that studio rehearsal clips are the greatest way to promote shows. I have seen these kinds of clips over the years and thought there might be a different way to cultivate interest in a particular project. Sometimes the actors are not prepared or they have their nose in their music sheets. So it makes a viewer question whether they want to see the production or not. The song in the video is being sung out of context. I say wait for some character development. The success of the show will depend upon the concept, the direction and whether or not the story pulls at the heartstrings. As a gay person I choose to root for it’s success.

There used to be another video on the internet of Zane singing a lovely ballad when he was a bit younger before he bulked up. It was either recorded at a school he was attending or a space similar to 54 below. I am thinking it was a Jason Robert Brown song. Maybe someone else remembers this. Not to be cynical, but I would have eaten hay if this project would have actually happened with the two announced actors. I just feel a little foolish for spending $8500 on my orchestra ticket. I did not get it through the box office, so I am a little concerned.

It is hard to believe that this highly creative production will only have 4 months under its belt while The Lost Boys will probably play forever. If Lincoln Center wants success with The Sound of Music perhaps they should consider flying nuns with an opening night appearance by Sally Field.

I thought the production was ok. Some actors handled the material better than others. Kerry Washington gave a very focused interpretation which felt authentic while others seemed to meander in and out of the light pushing rather than inhabiting. I am sure it was much more impressive when Whoopi played all five characters. My guess is that her performance was genuine and had a strong core.
