Universal's WICKED Film - News & Discussion Thread
 Feb 12 2024, 08:34:03 AM

Trailers are the single most important tool in marketing a movie. Millions and millions of people see them. Regardless of what Wicked turns out to be as a movie, the trailer is a failure. What’s surprising is how flat footed and dull it seems.

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 6/18/23

How does the loan taken out for SLIH work? Is the total added to the capitalization, or just the interest? Is it somehow built into the weekly running costs, or paid off before recoupment or added to the loss at the end of the run?

Sweeney Todd had its best week yet. I knew that Sound Design win would take it over the top! 🤣.

(BTW, good sound design isn’t about being able to hear an ensemble member suppress a sneeze at Wicked or Moulin Rouge. And not about expecting an ear bud experience. And not about thinking that Mrs. Lovett should be sitting in your lap while she sings in your ear.)

GREY HOUSE Previews

So perfect that such a strange play gets 2 opening nights! Given that reviews will come this evening, I was thinking about it this morning. It probably won’t be successful but I think this is a good example of the producers being smart to take the risk.

A couple people have pointed out that it’s in the same wheelhouse as some of A24’s films and things like Coherence. And it is a new genre for theater. I guess it could be called Horror Theater of the Absurd. The up

SWEENEY TODD To Launch National Tour Spring 2025

I also bet that Groban tours. Having 2024 off gives him the opportunity to take care of preexisting commitments, which helps explain the long delay.

what’s interesting is if the Broadway production runs after the leads leave, they’ll need names. They’re both dream roles, and I can imagine that a lot of notable ‘stars’ with voices would consider a run.

Sweeney Todd broke the Lunt-Fontanne house record. Amazing for a 7 performance week, and Groban missing a performance. It seems to be taking on a life of its own.

Reread your post Jason. Because YOU were unaware of the aggregate review page it instantly becomes an unreliable gauge of BW consensus.  And it is made up of “random anonymous ratings” something clearly as unknowable as whether it IS representative of BW’s sentiment. Your reply to me was arrogant, and wouldn’t hold up in a high school debating team.

Of course all the BW Sweeney Todd threads are full of negative comments. In fact I would surmise that the ave

for those asserting that the ongoing negativity about this production on BW is a minority opinion, I share the very page on this site that compares the professional critical response to those of BW armchair prognosticators. With 85% of the critics being positive, versus 30% by readers, it’s pretty clear that this particular chat board sits in an extraordinarily and perhaps actuarially unprecedented spread regarding the disapproval of a hit show. And it’s so interesting that Sondheim was aware of this phenomenon and even has a lyric to commemorate it:

I saw My Fair Lady, I sort of enjoyed it.

I would guess that this board has a lot of folks who relate to Frank. The rest of the world seem to live in a less lofty, critical and relentlessly judgmental world

Sellouts every night with big box office (of a Sondheim musical, no less), very favorable reviews (even if most had various complaints), coupled with a lot of withering criticism on this board. Not just, "I was kind of disappointed," but a pretty thorough trashing of the show and especially its direction.

The most obvious recent analogy isThe Music Man, but that doesn&#
