There's always "It Couldn't Please Me More" from Cabaret...

I went into Romance at the Taper this evening with no preconcieved expectations of the show, other than I usually enjoy Mamet. After spending an excruciating 45 minutes staring blankly at the stage, I can only conclude that either Mamet really missed the mark with Romance or I left my sense of humor back at work. There is absolutely no substance to the play- or at least to the first act, because I couldn't take it any longer and left. It meanders. The show tries to be witty and fails utterly....

From the workshop, I'd guess that it was the fall that April died- on Christmas eve, they said: Roger: I've got a car, so as far as April's bucket'll go. Santa Fe, Austin... Mark: We couldn't make Boston. Angel: April? Mark: Suicidal girl who OD'd. He says he loved her- what he loves is to bleed. Over two years since she left that car key, but he never drives it. So if it's over two years as of Christmas eve... that could indicate the fall...

Was Julia Santana that awful Mimi I'm thinking of? They never let her do it in NYC did they? She'd be the one, yes. They never let her, thank god.

"A bit off topic, but that line isn't in the movie is it 1/2 Shiksa Goddess (if you or anyone else knows)?" Not sure, MrMidwest, since the movie soundtrack doesn't have any of the in-between dialogue. I hope it's in there... it's one of those lines that I really like for no particular reason.

Even though I'm not a fan of gimmick casting, I think it's more disturbing to talk about those nightmares who actually made it into a production (or several) of Rent. Like Kirk McDonald, aka leprechaun Mark. "The schnow danthes. Obliviouth, Mimi and Roger share a schmall, lovely kith."
