Even though I'm not a fan of gimmick casting, I think it's more disturbing to talk about those nightmares who actually made it into a production (or several) of Rent.
Like Kirk McDonald, aka leprechaun Mark. "The schnow danthes. Obliviouth, Mimi and Roger share a schmall, lovely kith."
Angel:
I beat the drum of apocalypse
like orchestras on sinking ships. RENT workshop, Santa Fe
A bit off topic, but that line isn't in the movie is it 1/2 Shiksa Goddess (if you or anyone else knows)?
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
Here's a nightmare come true...Constantine Mouralis as Roger in the National Tour 2 years ago...YUCK!
There's Only Us
There's Only This
Forget Regret
Or Life Is Yours To Miss
No Other Road
No Other Way
NO DAY BUT TODAY!
Once upon a time I was a shy young thing Could barely walk and talk so much as dance and sing But let me hit that stage I wanna take my bow Cause Mama I'm a big girl now!

Not sure, MrMidwest, since the movie soundtrack doesn't have any of the in-between dialogue. I hope it's in there... it's one of those lines that I really like for no particular reason.

If I am listing the nightmare cast that I've actually seen I'd have to say:
Mark: Kirk McDonald Roger: Gilles Chiasson (loved his Will I? solo. Liked his Mark. Roger? Not so much) Mimi: Julia Santana Collins: Kye Brackett (the man hit a screeching falsetto note during the I'll Cover You (reprise) that should be illegal in most states.) Angel: Mark Setlock. (not an attractive Angel at all. In fact, so much so it was distracting) Maureen: I can't think of anyone who was atrocious, but Carrie Hamiton was probably my least favorite. Joanne: Fredi Walker. (she was scary) Benny: Brent Davin Vance. (He is one of my all time favorite ensemble performers and a really sweet guy, but a flaming gay Benny doesn't work)
"I hope it's in there... it's one of those lines that I really like for no particular reason."
The line just seems a little too theatrical to work in a movie to me.

I can't stand the convulsions Jessica Simpson's head goes into while she sings. I mean I've seen various techniques for vibrato..but she looks like she having a seizure.
If we're gonna do stunt casting, get someone less distracting.

I actually really liked Krystal Washington as Mimi, but I get why alot of people didn't.
Manley Pope..a friend of mine just LOVES Joey Fatone and got a boot of one of his shows, Manley being Roger. He reminded me of Millitary Jack Sparrow Roger. It was so odd. I swore he was drunk the whole time.

The cast I saw of RENT at La Jolla Playhouse was pretty awful, except for Neal Patrick Harris and Maggie Benjamin. The Mimi and Roger were awful -- I can't even remember who they were.

Maggie Benjamin wasn't at La Jolla Playhouse.
That was Leigh Hetherington as Maureen and Carla Bianco as Mark's Mom in 1997.
Maggie Benjamin made her Rent debut in 1998 in the Canadian Company as Mark's Mom before performing Maureen in the Benny Tour and eventually Broadway.
Assuming you saw full cast in La Jolla you saw:
Mark: Neil Patrick Harris Roger: Christian Mena Mimi: Julia Santana Collins: Mark Leroy Jackson Angel: Wilson Cruz Maureen: Leigh Hetherington Joanne: Kenna Ramsey Benny: D'Monroe SOLoist #1: Sharon Brown SOLoist #2: Kye Brackett Gordon: Curt Skinner Steve: Andy Senor Paul: Brent Davin Vance Alexi Darling: Sala Iwamatsu Mark's Mom: Carla Bianco
The swings were: Paul Oakley Stovall, Laura Dias (Maya Days), Ron Christopher Patrick, Hallie Bulliet & Owen Johnston II.
The La Jolla Run from July to mid September. They did get better after moving up Los Angeles later that year.
