Anthony Mackie in Macbeth — Broadway Spring 2027

EXCLUSIVE: Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson aka Captan America in the big-screen Marvel movies, will return to Broadway to take on William Shakespeare’s most notorious villain, Macbeth. He will take on the role from spring 2027 after an absence from the boards of 16 years, the actor reveals to Deadline.

Mackie will play Shakespeare’s tragic Scottish general, the Thane of Cawdor, in the New York transfer of a production that Tony and Olivier Award-nominated director Max Webster (Henry V) staged to great acclaim in London at the Donmar Warehouse Theatre in late 2023, with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo as the cruel Macbeths. The production later moved to the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End for a sold-out 11 week season.

I recall him being the standout, even as a relative newcomer, in A Behanding in Spokane back in 2010. Pre-Marvel.

Agreed and outside Marvel none of his movies have been steller successes, and even his Marvel movie was at the lower end of Marvel box office.

The new Avengers movie hype may help it though

I don't think so. We've seen so many Marvel stars do other movies or plays and being in Marvel doesn't translate to popularity in non-Marvel material.

I could see sales picking up if word of mouth and reviews are good, though. The most intriguing thing to me is the headphone aspect.

I think Anthony Mackie is more famous than you realize, especially amongst certain demographics. That said... I'm not sure any of his fame will translate to Broadway box office.

I mean the production he's transferring with is EXCELLENT, if that helps, unlike the Craig production...
