MATILDA Reviews

Apr 24, 2013 — 6:26:23 PM

In THE NEW YORKER (April 29 issue), Hilton Als gives "Matilda" an entirely positive review, praising all the principals (describing Oona Laurence as "deep" in the title role, Gabriel Ebert and Lesli Margherita as "faulous," and calling Bertie Carvel "a great new star"). He says the show is "directed with head-spinning alacrity by Matthew Warchus." There's not a negative word, yet it's an oddly incomplete review that doesn't even mention Tim Minchin, the score, the production design, etc. Bott...

THE NANCE Reviews

Apr 24, 2013 — 6:10:48 PM

THE NEW YORKER review by Hilton Als (April 29 issue) is a rave: "Douglas Carter Beane’s “The Nance” (at the Lyceum) is a nearly perfect work of dramatic art, whose power derives from its equitable compassion and its unromantic view of myth."

Matilda / Kinky Boots - My Thoughts

Apr 18, 2013 — 6:13:15 PM

RIPPED MAN: Thanks for sharing your thoughts. There's been a lot of venom directed at MATILDA on this board, but, like you, I loved it from start to finish. I haven't seen the B'way production yet, just the London one with the original adult leads. I thought it was so far from being just for children; the writing is so literate and clever. I saw the show just as Brantley saw it, am baffled by the people who think the score is weak. Frankly, it restored my waning love of musical theater (I was...

2013 Broadway.com Audience Award nominations

I tried to vote only in those categories where I'm in a position to actually have an opinion, but votes in ALL categories are required. What silliness.

Gay subtext of Matilda

Apr 14, 2013 — 6:07:29 PM

While Googling MATILDA, I actually came across some woman's Christian blog entry stating that it's a "pro-life" show ("every new life is a miracle"). Humans have a capacity to read whatever they want into anything.

Let's not overlook ANNIE: "The son will come out tomorrow."

MATILDA Reviews

Many thanks to all who've provided links to reviews; I joined BroadwayWorld specifically in order to track response to MATILDA. I saw the show in London last June, and was more excited by it than by any other musical in the past few decades (I was part of the Broadway community as a teen-aged actor in the 1960s and 70s, but now live on the west coast). This is my 1st post on this board, so please bear with me if I've gone about it in a clumsy way (this is a reply to the post that originally b...
