Spiderman the Musical is just another Disney musical gone wrong until you add Taymor and U2/Bono. Then great possibilities!

Evan Rachel Wood. Fantastic.

Theater of the Stars was clearly negligent. Their actions are indefensible. They owe the Tarzan advance money and should have found a way to return it immediately to AMTSJ.

But cancellations are, as Manos said, a part of the fabric of show business. And, the remarks made by the AMTSJ person who said that the Tarzan production meant two million dollars to AMTSJ is either a remark taken out of context or is a remark intended to deliberately mislead the public. It might mean two mil

Casa Manana prints their own programs. They have not called them "Casabills" for several years - they are just programs. They will either say "Broadway at the Bass" or "Summer at the Bass" at the top depending on which season it is.

The Music Hall in Fair Park - Dallas Summer Musicals - hires or contracts Playbill to do their programs. It is easier for them because DSM does not do any producing of their own. They get their copy from the tours way in advance and send it on to Playb

re: Jekyll/Linda Eder Fans: Agree with Linda Comments?

I agree with Linda. "Bring on the Men" was a fabulous intro for her character.

The best Jekyll and Hyde was the original production at the Alley Theatre directed by Greg Boyd. It had book problems and the show did not have enough shape to know where the act breaks should be but there were absolute brilliant performances by Wagner and Eder. Perhaps Wagner's best work ever! I never thought Cuccioli was as good. IMHO. I know others feel differently. Boyd directed with flair and it w

re: Best Summer Stock Theater

Have to agree that a theatre that presents shows year round is not a summer stock theatre.

Now Sacramento's Music Circus is summer stock because their summer productions are all self-produced in the round and is distinctly different from their "Broadway" season which is in a proscenium house and includes mostly tours. But Paper Mill - sorry - not a summer stock theatre. North Shore - sorry - not a summer stock theatre. You could hardly call Kansas City Starlight summer stock. 3 ou

Nathan Lane in Roundabout's The Man Who Came to Dinner
James Barbour in Jane Eyre

I loved Nathan in Forum and The Producers. He was way too over the top in TMWCTD.

I have never seen an actor more in love with himself than James Barbour.

re: Have you ever booed during a show?

I have never booed. But I have inadvertently giggled out loud when a show was really bad - for example the opening of Jane Eyre, Jane Eyre, Jane Eyre, Jane Eyre.

re: Annie Get Your Gun--original vs. revisal

Yeah, you know wrq, I am not for sure they actually say that, but it was my impression from watching the show. I am just curious enough right now to get my hands on the updated script and take a look.

More than anything, my problems with the revival (besides Bernadette) and agreeing with Elmore3003 here is the "Show within the Show" concept. Colonel Buffalo Bill is going to tell us how Annie got together with Frank.

Psssssssssssss.

That is all the air being let out of the balloon of dramatic tension. Play over.

Since we know how it ends, we never worry (yes, I know suspension of disbelief and all that, we shouldn't worry anyway, yada, yada, yada,)and it killed t

SRS was brilliant in Last Five Years, hilarious in Aida, and brilliant again in Scoundrels.

One of my faves.

re: What was the problem with Peters as Momma Rose?
 Mar 11 2008, 01:16:26 PM
I saw Tyne. I saw Bernadette. I'll take Bernadette. She was likable.

I agree 100% with smaxie.

I am not a huge fan of Bernadette but Gypsy made me a bigger one than I was. She was definitely having vocal troubles and definitely navigating her way through the songs.

Didn't care for her Witch or her Annie Oakley, but I liked her Rose - quite a bit. Maybe it was because I did not have high expectations. I am sure that helped.

re: Ann-Margret's understudy in Whorehouse

Casa does about 11 or 12 shows a season. Some they produce. Some are national tours.

Yockey has been there for over ten years now. I am probably a bit biased here because he hires me and I enjoy a decent career as a working actor.

However, you can't say all they have done for the past ten years are R&H and The Wizard of Oz. Whorehouse is definitely not R&H. Last year they did A Few Good Men. And they presented the tour of The Exonerated, with several hundred f- bombs

You think Whorehouse is edgy? Or are you being facetious?
re: Galveston Island Outdoor Musicals
 Mar 10 2008, 06:29:29 PM
I had friends who worked there. Tried to get in but they usually did not have many Equity contracts to go around. I did see some of the shows there and thought they were amazing! I saw shows outdoors that had soundtracks and later when they air conditioned the pit. That was the sticking point for the live orchestra in the humid gulf air. Real musicians would not expose their decent instruments to the elements. Once Yockey spent the money on the pit, all of that changed. I had a relative p
re: Ann-Margret's understudy in Whorehouse

I saw this Whorehouse. It was pretty weak. Mona must be a strong singer/actress or the show will not work. AT ALL.

Best Mona I have seen (out of five) is Julie Johnson of Das Barbecu fame. JJ did it for Casa Manana at Bass Hall in Fort Worth about 8 years ago. She stopped the show with Bus from Amarillo.

But now I am off the topic of AM and her understudy. Apologies.

re: MT Wichita Summer Stock
 Mar 10 2008, 05:35:15 PM
Music Theatre Wichita is a great theater. Never worked there but I have seen their work. They hire about 10 Equity actors a show, but the ensemble are college students. I am not certain what contract they are under but the leads are often Equity. They hire students from OU, OCU, Univ. of Michigan, and CCM to name a few. Think they have a college audition circuit of some kind.

Yes, Kansas is in the Midwest for sure. Wayne Bryan seems like a very nice man and has an excellent repu

re: On The Town dance question

A lot will depend on what kind of theatre you are working in? Is it community, college, high school, non-EQ., Equity or what?

There was another thread on here about Jerome Robbins shows. Often, those shows are done with the original choreography and they are made available either through guides that come with the rented materials or by hiring an approved choreographer from the original choreographer's staff or estate (if dead.)

Good luck.

re: How to justify similar ticket prices?
 Mar 10 2008, 05:02:13 PM
Weekly production costs are only part of a ticket price. Do you think Rent gets a discount on advertisement because its a smaller show? No, the ads cost the same. The general management costs the same. Theatre rent is also part of the costs. Also, royalties - not only to the authors but to the creative team. And even if tickets are priced similarly, Rent is likely to have a number of discounts in the market place and less expensive premium seats. So the average price is a lot cheaper.
