re: What Got u Hooked on Broadway Jun 17 2008, 12:23:54 PM
Well, what got me hooked on theater was seeing a college production of West Side Story when I was 8 or 9. My parents took me to see it and everything about it blew my mind (particularly the Somewhere ballet. I had no idea you could make something like that happen on stage). I'm sure if I saw that production now, I'd barf . . . but at 8 it was magical. 3 or 4 years later I discovered JC Superstar and Evita and then in my desire to learn more about musicals, I checked out the cast album

My best friend and I want to see this and I'd love to get discounted tickets for previews. Can anyone explain the ticketganza thing? Is this the only discount going on for the show right now?

re: Evans should have WON - I'm pissed! Jun 16 2008, 12:14:56 PM
I admit to having a bit of a crush on Daniel Evans. He's absolutely the cutest thing ever (although Mr. Szot is Hzot). I loved his George to pieces and the joy and exhuberance he brought to the show. He also seems like the sweetest and smartest guy (he's a philosophy student). I hope he comes back to New York again. (I realize this is the 2nd time I've seen him on Broadway. I saw the Midsummer Night's Dream he was in a few year's back.)

re: Congratulations Tony Award Winner Laura Benanti Jun 16 2008, 12:10:25 PM
she kicked so much ass in this show. i went to Gypsy for Patti (and I was not disappointed), but Laura Benanti just blew me away. I saw her in Nine and she didn't make much of an impression, but her Louise was so good. She completely upstaged the guy who played Tulsa in "All I Need is the Girl." I just watched her for that entire number.

re: Michael Riedel's Views on the Tony Awards Jun 16 2008, 11:54:36 AM
I don't know what reviews you read, but every one that I read praised the show from top to bottom, so I don't know what you're talking about. Isherwood's in the Times took the whole "what is this exactly?" stance. It was a positive review, but I felt that when critics were asking is this a musical or a concert it's indicative of how people can dismiss the show as "not a musical". in the last week or so I read a lot of "avant-garde" being thrown at it as well. I primarily work in dow

re: Including Non-Nominated Musical Performances: Yay or Nay? Jun 16 2008, 11:49:15 AM
I vote for doing performances from shows that are new that season. The Lion King/Rent thing was just ick to me and shoved out the Best Book/Best Play Revival off the air. I miss the PBS pre-show, which was so great. I also would have preferred a bigger tribute to Sondheim.

re: SUNDAY - best musical to ever get shut out? Jun 16 2008, 11:32:27 AM
loved, loved, loved Sunday in the Park with George. I loved everything about it. I watched the whole thing bawling my eyes out. I felt Daniel Evans did something really special with the role--he built his character arc to encompass both Georges, so the resolution of Act I George's dilemma happens with Act II George (which is why he is a giddy kid at the end . . . he makes the connection at last). Jenna Russell was also amazing. The production really highlighted the love story and I

Saddened by the Passing Strange dislike. This was one of the best things I saw last year. Maybe it just jibes with my downtown tastes (I'm a big fan of the Public Theater) and identity politics, but I found it an extremely moving show with stellar performanes all around. I knew it didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell with a lot of the reviews wondering if it was a "rock concert" or a musical. I felt it was very much a theatrical experience and suffered from people's narrow defi

I too was very surprised. This seemed to be a lock for Sunday (as it was back in the 80s). It's sad that such a glorious production was completely shut out. I've yet to see SP, so I can't comment on which show deserved the award more. Ultimately, I'm glad Sunday was revived well and was very well received.
