I know there has been talk on who will play Mama Rose (Zeta-Jones, Streisand) but who would you like to see in the other roles?

Anne Hathaway, Alison Lohman, and Larisa Oleynik are some actresses who I think would play Louise well.

WHAT? Is Hollywood making a new movie of GYPSY? Well at least it can't be worse than the Rosalind Russell fiasco!

Wasn't the Bette Midlar catastrophe considered a "movie"?

I was contemplating this exact subject yesterday and really feel Liza Minelli would be brillant. Granted she might need some vocal re-training but overall, I think from what I've heard from her, she'd be amazing. Her and Anne Hathaway would be perfection!

The movie itself could be kinda like Chicago starting off in Gypsy Rose Lee's dressing room and travel back in time and then back to the present. I think with the right director, it could be a fasincating film.

Well Rob Marshall would most likely direct. I have heard that Anne Hathaway will be Johanna in Sweeney Todd. I think she wouldn't be in two movie musicals.

Liza wouldn't need "Re-training"...it's called digitalizing the voice for a movie.

i think two times i enough...i just dont think the show works as a movie...i love it...and on stage it is amazing...but maybe its the same reason a chorus line didnt work...people just dont care about performers and their life? maybe its the fact that all the big showy dance/costume numbers are meant to be over the top and the real showy numbers are all just someone singing is a problem too...a big high ballad on screen isnt impressive...big dance numbers are...i dunno maybe over the top musicals dont work on screen (like producers)...maybe people just dont get musical satire because people look down on musicals right now...either way catherine zeta jones would be terrible for the role even though she is talented...barbara would be very interesting...she sure has a great voice...and liza i could see the acting and the character in her...but can her face move anymore?

o well we will see

Streisand would be good as Mama Rose but, would she be accommodating?

Yes, because the other two sucked big balls!

... in my humble opinion.

I really don't believe the two films were terrible, both were quite true to the story (granted I would have loved Merman in the film instead of Roz, but I can't say anything bad about her because her character was flawless as Madame Rose). Bette Midler was awesome! I don't care what anyone says, when Roz Russell comes down the walkway and sings "Everything's Coming Roses" in 'Rose's Turn" and all the lights behind her start to light up, I had chills down my spine. PLus I love the "Gotta Have a Gimmick" number!

I used to think that Rosalind Russell was great as Mama Rose, until I saw Mame and saw the same character. I still can't hate the original movie though. I loved Natalie Wood as Louise and seeing the dance numbers on screen. I also thought they had an excellent Electra, Tessa, and Zeppa. Karl Malden isn't bad as Herbie either.

To me, everyone who's played Rose had something that bothered me. I don't know why, but there is always something wrong with the way they play/sing the role to me. I'm only judging by cast recordings through, and I haven't seen or heard Lupone do it.

Schuyler Fisk is another actress who I wouldn't mind seeing play Louise.

I love the original film. I see nothing wrong with it. The Bette Midler one, on the other hand, bored me to tears. And, she was just all wrong for the role. The only person I can think of who would be worse than Midler, is Streisand. I say 2 versions is enough.

Catherine Zeta-Jones should be Mama Rose, I think she would do the role justice and I think her "Rose's Turn" would be fantastic.

Arthur Laurents has stated that he would not allow Minnelli to play Rose because Liza begs to be liked when she is on stage/screen and Mamma Rose couldn't care less. I believe she is too old to play the role on screen at this point.
I believe Catherine Z. Jones is the big rumor, Anne Hathaway seems like an ideal choice for Louise.

Please don't tell me this is actually happening. The movie will lay a big, big egg. The whole thing would have to be re written to interest todays movie going public. In its present form not too many people ( present company excepted) between 15 and 40 would give a stuff about Gypsy Rose Lee. It would require a completely different script and major stunt casting.

Other actresses I could see as Rose: Kathy Bates, Annette Bening, Judy Davis, Megan Mullally

More ideas for Louise: Andrea Bowen, Mandy Moore, Lacey Chabert, Kate Mara, Anneliese van der Pol

I like the idea of Anne Hathaway as Louise. After all, she did go through that whole transformation in Princess Diaries.

I am not really familiar with Schuyler Fisk's work except I saw her in the Baby-Sitters Club movie!

Streep would nail it. I think that woman has made a pact with the devil. No matter what she does, or how big a stretch, she is electrifying. Streep would nail Momma Rose.

Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents actually hated the 60s version, didn't even want the studio to do that, and in my opinion, Bette Miller's version is no good too cause she was overacted in the movie. A new movie whould be good.
