not sure actually LOL i just think her mix of attitude, sass, sarcasm, and sexiness might make an interesting version of rose

Posted: 10/24/06 at 6:35pmI could see Diane Keaton, Sigourney Weaver, Catherine O'Hara, and Helen Mirren (if she can sing) giving interesting performances in the part. I also wouldn't mind seeing Adrienne Barbeau or Lesley Ann Warren do it, but I doubt they would be cast unless it was a television film.

I really think CZJ is too young for the role, and nothing I have seen her in makes me stand up and go WOW!!!!!! She has also never struck me as a Mama Rose type... I think there are many other Hollywood actress who deserve a role like Mama Rose more, and would suite the part better.
Anyone else feel this way?

The real life Momma Rose was much younger than the actresses who tend to play the role on Broadway (when Andrea McArdle played the role in Texas she was closer to the character's real age). On film, Rose should ideally be played by an actress who is youthful yet too old to have any chance to succeed in show business in the 1930s. Which is why I think Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, and Liza Minnelli are too old to play the role in the proposed film, just my personal opinion though.

i understand what your saying...but rose is supposed to be "dried up"...when they say she coulda been a good stripper in her day...i think the audience would say..."who wouldnt wanna see catherine strip now???" haha she is too pretty and young and not to mention not loud and crazy...and in response to the person who said mama doesnt wanna attention...they r hella crazy! thats the whole character...liza would be good if she could move her face and wasnt so annoying...shes a lil too lounge....babs would actually sing the songs without breaking ur ears...and meryl would act it great...but i want someone who can do it all!!!
and besides if we are going for age and all that...then y is louise played by such older people...not to mention why is she pretty! gypsy in real life is NOT pretty

Posted: 10/24/06 at 10:14pmI don't think casting someone attractive as Louise is necessarily wrong. She's a character who hasn't been encoruaged to look her best for most of her life.

Posted: 10/24/06 at 10:19pmAfter hearing Liza sing SOME PEOPLE and ROSE'S TURN. I would not want to sit through 2.5 hours hours of her in this role. It would become way too much about Liza. Arthur Laurent's has said it in the past, and I kind of agree. It would be too much about "look at me, I'm Liza, look what I can do." Momma doesn't give a flying f*ck what you think about her. She is a monster

Posted: 10/24/06 at 10:36pmi dont think casting someone pretty as louise is wrong...BUT people were using catherines age as a plus because it is historically correct...but if we want to be historically correct or true to the story then louise should be younger and less attractive...

Posted: 10/24/06 at 10:51pmI'm not one of those people. I think she could be good in the role, but I'd rather see someone a bit older do it, too.

Posted: 10/25/06 at 2:52pmthere are too many rosalind russell haters on this board. To be honest, I find Gypsy tiring - but Russell really glammed up that role and Mame; thats one of my favorite movies. Enough badmouthing Russell; she is a legend people!! And damn she did "Rose's turn" so well!

Posted: 10/25/06 at 4:25pmI loved Bette Midler in "Gypsy," so I don't think we need another version...let alone with someone who, I think, is too young for the part (CZJ)...or just plain wrong for the part (Streisand.)

Posted: 10/25/06 at 4:26pmAlison Porter would be a much better Dainty June. I really can't imagine her playing Louise - she's about three feet tall.

Posted: 10/25/06 at 4:47pmYou would know better than I about that, Michael. I've only seen what she looks like nowadays in pictures and video clips. However, I do think she could probably act the role well.

Posted: 10/28/06 at 3:35pmPersonally,I'm a big fan of the show. I think Rose is one of, if not the best character a musical theatre actress can play. There's so much depth to the role, so much you can do with her. But I must admit, I don't think this project will ever get off the ground. For one, the show IS a bit dated, as the attendance (or lack there of) of the recent revival with Bernadette showed. I'm not saying I didn't love that production or Bernadette as Rose, because God knows I did, but the fact is todays Broadway Theatre goers sadly would rather have big flashy blockbusters like Hairspray or Wicked than a classic like Gypsy. And there have already been two less than successful movie versions. Personally, I love Rosalind Russell, but hated her in the role. I liked Bette as Rose, but think someone else could have been better. If I had to cast it today, I agree that Meryl would act the hell out of it, but have qualms about her singing it. I just don't like the Idea of CZJ playing it. Whether age appropriate or not, I just can't see her playing the role and think if she were to be cast, it would just be to get her fan base to go see the movie. Streisand will never do it, and let's face it, Liza has seen better days.

I'm sure no one will read this this late in the discussion, but I've got to contribute. CZJ does not have what it take to play this role. She is too "perfect" for Mama Rose. Let's not forget that it is part Sondheim musical. I love him but he puts more words into one song than many people would say in a lifetime. It is hard stuff. The person who plays Rose has got to be a SINGER first. Megan Mullaly is probably the best person suggested on this thread b/c she fits that question
able age barrier, she can sing, and she has the acting chops. Who cares what the actress playing Louise looks like, movie magic will make her ugly as she needs to be. The actress who plays her just has to be able to keep up with Rose. Lacy Chabert is sweet, Ann Hatheway is annoying, can Allison Lohman sing? "Little Lamb" isn't the toughest number in the world but done wrong it is painful.
I loved Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters, but then again I love them whatever they do. Another "Gypsy" movie will only be successful with a little work... the right work. All the Rentheads in the world could not make "Rent" a boxoffice success... it was too long. Gypsy is already a long show and it could likely suffer the same fate as Rent, cutting some great stuff (Halloween) and keeping in some things that did not work on screen ("Today for You" and Rogers half of "Dying in America" - an ode to Bryan Adams videos).
It's sad to say but today's movie goers need something more than good music and a good story, although my 16/17 year old film student's loved "Singing in the Rain" but are not so keen on Moulan Rouge. Musicals are a dicey genre and I think that everytijme it's a crap shoot...I mean who knew Richard Gear could soft shoe!

I think most people on this board would disagree that Rose needs to be a "singer" first and foremost. Tyne Daly, one of the most effective Roses of all time was extraordinary not because of her voice but because of her ACTING.
Louise doesn't need to be much of a singer either - particularly for film.
And may I remind everyone that there is NOTHING Hollywood (and the Oscars) likes better than to take a beautiful actress and make her dumpy for a film.
