THE PRODUCERS is back to 93% attendance and a $846K gross.
And THE COLOR PURPLE and JERSEY BOYS are clearly bona fide hits now.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:04pmYou're annoying. The grosses are back to normal, and show no sign that the show will close soon.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:08pmLooks like curtains for Ring of Fire. It's the only show that dropped. Did even worse than its first week. I'm really disappointed. Was hoping Dick Maltby would have another hit.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:11pmIt was probably heavily comped. Pajama Game dropped too, also because of comps.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:15pmDo comps really work? All they do is help spread the word that a show is bad, scaring ticket buyers off.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:18pmWith an average ticket price of $47.75 -- by far, the lowest on Broadway -- and mediocre attendance levels, RING OF FIRE is hemorrhaging money right now and given its likely critical reception, may not be long for the Barrymore.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:25pmThe same was said of Barefoot this early in their run. They got mauled by the critics too and the gross has improved week on week.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:26pm..but is it already too late for another show to get the Ethel Barrymore in time for the Tony nominations?

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:29pmWell, Barefoot is only barely breaking even now (last week was the first week of the run to not lose money) . It's not as if it's a hit or something. It may run a few months, but it'll never come close to recouping.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:33pmIf Ring of Fire were to close by the end of March, that would be plenty of time for another show to make it in under the Tony deadline (May 10th). For something like Rabbit Hole or Lieutenant of the Inishmore, the cast and entire production is in tact, so it would just be about building a new set for the theatre, which could be done in a few weeks.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:33pmso...shows such as Pajama Game can't lose any money...correct? because is a non profit theatre?

Well I'm not suggesting either show will ever trouble Wicked or Lion King or anything, but the death knell was being sounded for Barefoot in its first week of previews and it seems to be slowly turning the tide.
Why should comps disappear?

Not for profit productions aren't judged on profit or loss, so they can't be considered a hit or a flop (unless they transfer to a commercial theatre). Not for profit productions are carefully budgeted within a season and operating costs are paid by subcriber income, as well as donations from private (corporations and individuals) and public (NY State Council on the Arts, the NEA, etc.. ) sources. If a show turns out to be a much bigger seller than expected and exceceds expectations financially, any extra income simply goes back into the "kitty" to be used for the next season's slate of plays, as well as into the theatre's endowment.

Posted: 2/27/06 at 6:41pmoh...tnks for the info Margo. And Popculture i find it unfair if i see a show and i pay a lot of money and i have someone seeing the same thing for nothing. I don't know...i dont expect people to agree with me. But i think it is unfair.
