I don't think that as it was originally conceived, the problem with Oscar's inability to commit was the fact that he was gay. It could be interpreted that way, of course. But ultimately it should be Charity's story and not Oscar's coming out story.
Denis O'Hare doesn't give off many straight vibes. You can almost see him wearing an "I can't even sing straight" t-shirt. Maybe his portrayal seems gay?

If you read through the Charity threads, you'll see the following types of comments regarding O'Hare's performance:
