"It's significantly scarier, and the pacing is much better, than the plodding mini-series, which really drags in spots."

The movie is very scary and great.
However, as much as I enjoyed Skarsgard's consistently malevolent Pennywise, I found Tim Curry's Pennwise's constant back and forth between traditional, and relatively kid-friendly clown and his uber terrifying one far more frightening.

That's my biggest complaint about not only this movie, but virtually all modern horror movies. It's one reason why I don't see a lot of horror movies.
