I just got an advanced copy of the soundtrack. Hudson is pretty respectable. Knowles, however, is pretty lifeless.

Hudson is taking her cues from Holiday's approach vocally, as we as line readings. The thing is, she can do it.

There is one new song that much like the Jackson Five's A-B-C. The kid singing it is so dead-on it sounds like one of Michaels "lost tracks"

The cd came in plain package with "advanced copy" stamped on it.
Hudson gives her all in "And I Am Telling You." When you hear it you'll think it is Holiday's little sister singing it. I don't mean that in a derogatory way either.

To be fair, Deena doesn't have comparable material -- requiring showy vocal pyrotechnics -- and from divas Sheryl Lee on has scored via the totality of their performance, glamour, presence, charm, etc. The songs, oddly enough, are only part of the equation.
Whereas: Effie's material is the raw gut of the show, and it soars, in and out of context in such a way that it always cuts better. I bet Beyonce makes Deena work on screen (and I'm not much of a fan.) The bigger question, that's always been tied to this show: whose story is it, Deena's or Effie's? The show's arc supports Deena, but all of the emotion is in Effie's turns. Stay tuned.

I hope she's not doing Holiday's line readings, because Holiday couldn't act.

Yes, I think this is a "highlights." Or rather, hope it is.

Man I can't wait for this soundtrack and this film. I've been counting down for months since they officially announced the release date. People come up to me and ask "did you know they're making a Dreamgirls movie?" and I want to respond, "Have you been living under a rock for the last year?" :-P But anyway, this is going to be a wonderful film; I'm really excited for Hudson!
Cheers,

Jamie Foxx sounds great. Eddie Murphy can sing.. but it is hard to believe that Thunder would have had a successful career with that voice.
The surprising thing to me is how many of the best performances sound so much like the original broadway cast members.

Well, It is hard to judge. The advanced copy I have is more like a "sampler" with 18 tracks - mostly complete versions of the incidental songs like "I'm Looking for Something, Baby" and "I Miss You, Old Friend" It does have the full "It's All Over/ And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" and other fun stuff.
So, Anika isn't heard much. But what little there is is very good.

Maybe the personality he puts into his performance on-screen will make up for that.
Does Anika sing what's left of her part in the original keys?
Also, Love Love You Baby is in the movie, right?
