These kind of personal "vendettas" (of sorts) just drives me nuts. Lists like this, or those list of 20 things that only people that are "XX" can understand, or what never to say to "Xxx" have so gotten out of control.
Why have we become a society that is so dependent on approval from stangers?

Full disclosure: not being gay, I am somewhat outside Madonna's traditional fanbase and target audience. My appreciation for her is relatively casual- she had some damn fine singles, "Like a Prayer" is a masterpiece of pop music, and she was quite a looker, and still looks pretty good for her age when she doesn't pretend to be 21 again.
That said, I think EVERYONE underestimates her. Madonna has had no period of irrelevance or unpopularity. From the early eighties to today, she has remained a mainstream pop star without becoming a novelty, a nostalgia act or a cult figure like Cyndi Lauper. Paul McCartney. Bruce Springsteen. I can't even say David Bowie, because he has retired and made comebacks a few times. U2. Madonna. I can't really think of any other evergreen performers who have remained mainstream relevant nonstop for over three decades without flagging.
You could argue Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler, but I consider them mostly cult figures along the lines of Cyndi Lauper- they have had intermittent moments of mainstream musical success, but they are not "perpetually relevant" to mainstream culture. Their continued careers are mostly bolstered by niche audiences who treat them quite well.

Posted: 11/16/14 at 9:20pmI consider Madonna to be as "perpetually relevant" as Britney Spears, Barbra Streisand or Cher. Meaning that they have achieved a status legendary enough to have devoted fans put their albums at #1 the first week regardless the quality or content of what is recorded. Besides that, I think their relevance is limited to being alive and still recording. That's about it. Gaga, Swift and Perry will prove the same relevance shortly (though I feel they've probably peaked and have perhaps proven it already).
