"17 Kids and Counting" on TLC tonight
"17 Kids and Counting" on TLC tonight#1
Posted: 9/29/08 at 11:26pmSo, I was switching the channels and caught the premiere episode of this show. It's about the family of 17 kids from Arkansas whose first names all start with "J". Tonight, they made a trip to New York to be on the Today Show where the mom proudly announced she is pregnant with child 18. It was all so Stepford like. They took so much joy in parading all of the kids around and everywhere they went, they would pass out a family portrait of the whole brood. I was actually a little disturbed by this whole pageant! The oldest boy is getting married to a girl from Hilliard, Florida- which is a small town right outside of Jacksonville. His fiance is one of 8 children and she's only 18 or 19 years old. The whole family is here for the wedding. I'll get off my soap box now!

Posted: 9/30/08 at 6:45amAren't the Palin children home schooled too? How else can they be out with their mom when they should be in school?

Posted: 9/30/08 at 7:02amAccording to the mom- all of their children are gifts from God.

I'm sorry if this seems heartless, but the planet is just not at a point that it can support families with 17 children. Imagine all the resources being used to sustain that family (not to mention the money).
I'm sorry, but having 17 children is just irresponsible.

According to their website, the Duggars originally did use birth control at the start of their marriage since they "couldn't afford children at that time." When they were ready to have kids, for some reason that I can't quite understand, the wife went back on the pill and miscarried the baby she had unknowingly conceived. After they saw a Christian doctor, they were "horrified" to discover that you can get pregnant and miscarry while on the pill.
They were grieved! They were Christians! They were pro-life! They realized that their selfish actions had taken the life of their child. They prayed and asked God to forgive them, and to teach them to love children like He loves children.
Needless to say, they no longer take the pill and made up for their mistake by having 18 kids. And the best part is that since they run a church out of their ENORMOUS house, they get tax breaks. God bless America.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 12:57pmYeah, I've seen other specials on TLC about this family. It just screams out to eventually become an incest cult. Mostly because I think the girls believe they are supposed to be baby makers too, and it wouldn't surprise me if the boys wanted a huge family too. Okay, the incest might be a bit much, but with them, you never know.

Would they have gotten a show if they were black? I doubt they'd even get a meeting if they weren't white.
I find this whole thing disgusting.

Posted: 9/30/08 at 1:05pmI think I'll stick with Jon & Kate Plus 8... This family kind of (really) creeps me out.

Posted: 10/6/08 at 11:26pmOkay, tonight, they were focusing on the eldest son who is getting married (to a girl who lives about 40 minutes from me btw). He and his fiance have never kissed and want their first kiss to be on their wedding day. The son says that he wants to stay pure. They even get familiy members to chaperone their dates. I don't know what to say to this. He said he was looking for a girl who was just like his mom- his fiance looks like she could be one of his sisters. I definitely like Jon and Kate as they at least seem pretty "normal".

Regarding the family's comments on their website, this just proves why EVERYONE needs education about birth control. When I first read that I thought to myself "who DOESN'T know that the pill can mess with your periods/that you should be off it for at LEAST a few moonths if you're trying to get pregnant because of those risks." Even if you don't want to use it, you should at least be taught something more than the "don't have sex, because you will get pregnant, and die" birth control method.
...and yes. Jon & Kate all the way. This family is a little much to handle. Or, well, a lot much.

They are waiting to kiss on their wedding night? Are you kidding me? They didn't even wait in the f-ing 18th century.
I'm sorry but I hate this idealized view of affection. Wonder if they even know how to make babies... hopefully not so they don't reproduce.

I can't believe the after all the tradition and the old fashioned planning, they discard the once in a lifetime traditional moment of the groom seeing the bride for the first time that day as she walks down the aisle.
And I can't believe that even modern brides are satisfied to NOT BE MARRIED in their WEDDING PICTURES! When you get your pictures taken BEFORE the wedding you're not a married couple in your own wedding photos. How lame is that???

Posted: 1/25/09 at 10:05pmI am morbidly curious about this show. Isn't this the one where some of the kids are named after Fiddler on the Roof characters, or is that another show?
