Posted: 8/22/09 at 11:35amThat's terrible. Something similar happened to one of my high school's star football players too, though it wasn't during a game. He was out jogging in our neighborhood and just collapsed. I don't understand how this happens to athletes, it's so sad.

Posted: 8/22/09 at 12:34pmThis also happened to a boy on the freshman basketball team at a school I used to teach with. So sad.

Horrible indeed.
The tragedy notwithstanding, I couldn't help but wonder who wrote that piece? One of the students attending that school? Someone for whom English is their second language? There's no proofreading? Can the proofreader be just as uneducated?
Oh well, my rant for the day.

Terrible story. Just as a side note, it's "loses" his life, not "looses."
It really is scary how the littlest thing can affect the body to the point of death.

Please forgive me for my grammatical error. I replaced that link with a much better one.
Here it is.

That poor family. My heart goes out to them.
Sounds like it might have been Long QT syndrome.

This seems to happen somewhere at least once a year.
It's odd that it's athletic kids who are dropping dead of heart problems, and not the fat, lazy ones.

Posted: 8/22/09 at 4:07pmTragic beyond belief! All sports have an element of danger, and football is one of the worst. I blame the schools.

Posted: 8/22/09 at 4:18pmAren't cases like this usually caused by undetected heart conditions?

Jim, you really blame the SCHOOL? REALLY?
You are more delusional than I thought!

Jim, Jim ,Jim, kids with undiagnosed heart problems will die and they do whether it is on the sports field or walking down the street, or shoveling snow. It is NOT the school's fault. We do not know the reason for this kid's death, could have been an aneurism. Schools are not responsible for weak artery walls... or ARE THEY?!?

Do we know this man was not a closet drug addict? Has an autopsy been performed?
I blame Dolly Parton.

blame the school?
I'm pretty sure that when a student is about to participate in a sport, there is a physical examination requirement and that physicians and parents must sign and give their permission. In this way, the school is not responsible.
#19re: 18 Year Old Loses His Life Playing Football
Posted: 8/22/09 at 5:22pmJane, that is correct.
#20re: 18 Year Old Loses His Life Playing Football
Posted: 8/22/09 at 8:16pmYou must be medically cleared to play sports at the high school and college levels. Drug tests are, often, part of these exams. EKGs, CAT scans, and MRIs are not.
#21re: 18 Year Old Loses His Life Playing Football
Posted: 8/22/09 at 8:59pmHow about drug screenings?
#22re: 18 Year Old Loses His Life Playing Football
Posted: 8/22/09 at 9:03pmI guess the presence of drugs would show up in the blood tests.
#23re: 18 Year Old Loses His Life Playing Football
Posted: 8/22/09 at 9:12pmAs I said...drug tests are, often, part of these exams.

^ As a High School Student in a very Football-oriented area, I can assure you that Football coaches can be pretty friendly with these tests (if they have to be).
