I am sorry, Eris, I meant to say regular, random drug testing.
Anyone can pass a drug test if they know it is going to be done a few weeks or even days before, and lord knows these drug tests done on the kids are probably not as rigidly monitored as a drug test for legal reasons. A kid can pee in a cup and go out and snort, shoot or smoke whatever before a game.

"All sports have an element of danger, and football is one of the worst. I blame the schools."
Are you kidding me?
Even if this kid did not play football, if he had such a condition, it could have affected him another time.
Go think or look twice or something.
In regards to the situation, I feel bad for the family. How heartbreaking.

Ah, okay. They didn't 15 years ago.

I'm sure it's quite clear that taking drugs is not permitted, and they've all signed on the line in agreement.
Drug tests-I agree that they probably aren't as strictly monitored as they are in professional sports when millions are being paid to the athlete. Still, the school shouldn't be held responsible if a kid sneaks drugs.

I think the school should be held responsible if a kid wasn't even fairly drug-tested. This kid OBVIOS LY had some sort of medical school that was beyond the knowledge of his football coach, so I don't blame this on the school one bit.

Posted: 8/23/09 at 10:05amI don't agree. Sorry but I'm blaming the school if a kid does drugs when he's already agreed not to. sure, it's nice if the school goes out of their way to monitor everyone, but I'm from the day when people took responsibility for what they did. I'm not cool with putting the blame on the school because "they didn't test me to see if I was breaking the law."

Posted: 8/23/09 at 10:27amWell (in my area, at least) the schools have to drug test the the students, so the school is also not doing what they agreed to do.

So, it's the school's fault if the kid does drugs.
We'll have to agree to disagree.

Posted: 8/23/09 at 10:37amGood heavens no! At the High School age, the child SHOULD know better...but I do feel that if the student wasn't drug tested, the school should have to get and equally sized slap on the wrist.

Well, there's where we strongly differ. I prefer the days before entitlement and blaming anyone but yourself became the norm.
Why should the school be slapped on the wrist? And what if the kid decides he's going to do drugs the day after the test, and then goes out on the playing field?
You can spin this any way you want but the blame is with the person who chose to do the drugs and no one else.

Posted: 8/23/09 at 5:10pmI need to ask...are we even sure his death was drugged related? I feel he's being painted as some druggie when the cause of death hasn't been released due to medical privacy laws.

Okay, because Jane, you really sound as if you are blaming the boy for taking drugs.
It spun off in that direction.

Aren't cases like this usually caused by undetected heart conditions?

99% of the time, yes.
I had two kids die when I was in High School. One was a surfer, and one was a football player.
