I'll agree that it was one of the better years for movies in modern times.

But Three Kings??? I hated that movie.

justme- I LOVE your avatar! Who is it?

Also, I agree that 1925ish-1940 was the pinnacle of movie making, although the late forties and early fifties were really good too. I also agree that 1939 is THE pinnacle. That's really all I watch are movies from that time period, I don't really like almost anything from the past 30 orso years, I dunno, I'm very nostalgic.

my avatar is a very young, pre code Joan Crawford. It's from 1928-1930 period of time. I have a bunch like that and I'll be changing the avatar a lot this month.

And to answer yodamarie...there was an even earlier silent Tarzan movie that wasn't half as good as the pre-code Tarzan with the half naked Maureen and Johnny. They never did make them any better than the first two Tarzen movies in the 1930's. You were probably watching one of the terrible 1950's versions are comparsion. ALL of those were terrible, pale comparisons.

Not that Weissmuller was that good of an actor...but his thighs looked mighty nice in that loincloth.

1999 WAS a very good year for film. But, despite a long list of good films, as has been stated, it was not the best. But, it is definitely in the Top 10 best years, maybe Top 5.

"And anyone who just sees Fight Club for the surface has NO idea what the movie is or stands for AT ALL."

I know what the movie is and stands for and I still hated it. It's definitely in my overrated list. I did like American Beauty but only because I thought it was an interesting story and I loved Annette Bening's performance in it. Magnolia was truly the standout movie of the year for me and I was amazed it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. I loved everything about it.

DGrant - You chose one of my favorite movie years of all time, though you left out one very important classic film - Airplane! I still have my LP of the movie dialogue that was released that year.

THREE KINGS was the best movie of 1999 by a mile......f**k AMERICAN BEAUTY; stereotypical, condescending, sexist, absurd nonsense.

I love classic films. LOVE them. But I am thrilled to enjoy contemporary classics and look forward to the next great year in film and/or era. And the fun thing is ya never know when that might happen. This year could end up being a great year for all we know. And that's fun.

We can quibble the various films of 1999 all we please, but it IS considered a great year in film. I just hope all of you who are so quick to say what films you hate realize that just because YOU disliked something doesn't mean it IS bad. And, it certainly doesn't mean that said film isn't considered to be a great part of film history. I just hope you realize that. There are tons of films I don't care for--I would never be so foolish as to dismiss the place in film history that that film has taken. At some point consensus becomes fact despite what we may personally feel.

These years are my favorites, and I'm not going to list ALL of the fantastic pre-code titles before 1934, as most of the titles are unknown to most movie viewers. These are just the most popular or well known of the years below:

1931
Blonde Crazy- Pre code done right. You can't go wrong if Cagney and Blondell are in the movie.
Public Enemy- Brutal, honest look at gangster life in NY.
Mille- ok film, it's pre code and all, but I've seen better.
Night Nurse- Stanwyck and Gable spar in a sick story of gansters starving two kids for insurance money.
Illicit- great "we don't have to live by other's morals" films.
The Champ- early version of the fight story/Cooper steals film.
Jekyll and Hyde- early, but not original version..good though.
Dracula- well, it's great, what can I say!?
Fankenstein- same here.
Cimmaron- saw it...Dunne is good but..boring.
The Front Page- not even the first version of His Girl Friday.
A Free Soul- Shearer pre code-great film..she does skank well.
Min and Bill- love me some Beery and Dressler.
Morroco- .Cooper and Dietreich are BORING in this..but watch it for her "who will buy my apples?" number.
Little Ceaser-Edward G- this is where those Bugs Bunny cartoons came from..remember? "Rocky's really mad now...yeah..yeah."
Whoopee-Cantor film, great numbers.
City Lights-Chaplin film, one of his best..see it for the ending.
Mata Hari-Garbo is great in this tale
Platinum Blonde - before Harlow
Possessed -non camp Crawford in a movie with same title as forties one, but different story entirely.
Waterloo Bridge- they SAID she was a whore in this version

1932
13 Women- Myrna Loy as a Chinese girl bent on revenge
Back Street- Irene "tragic" Dunne
Three on a Match- one of the best pre codes made
The Crowd Roars- good look back at the twenties
What Price Hollywood- original Star is Born
Scarface- great original movie version
Freaks -you must know this title
The Mummy -one of the early versions
Grand Hotel -goes without saying, great movie
Farewell to Arms- saw it, love Cooper, but...BORING
Tarzan the Apeman - original, pre code, half naked and great
Strange Interlude - bizarre "hearing what characters are saying in their heads" concept with Shearer and Gable.
Frisco Jenny- Chatterton is fantastic, as usual.
No Man of Her Own- Lomabard and Gable, before they were hitched
Bill Of Divorcement- Hepburn overacting

1933
Blondie Johnson -one of the best Blondell ganster flicks
Dinner at Eight- famous movie
42nd Street-famouse movie
Bombshell- Harlow playing an overworked movie star-wonderful film
Duck Soup-Marx brothers, it's a good one
I'm no Angel-Mae West movie, loved it...see Glebb's Mae West thread for more info
King Kong- need I say anything here? Fantastic.
Little Women- saw it, Frances Dee was better in Blood Money.
Queen Christina- Great Garbo movie with beautiful camera work.
She Done him Wrong- Mae West again, always good.
Morning Glory- Hepburn, overacting again.
Flying Down to Rio- early Fred and Ginger.
Female- THE BEST pre-code about a women exectuve screwing all the men in her office.

1934
Cleopatra- Colbert and Demille epic with famous lesbian dance scene.
Gay Divorcee- Fred and Ginger, one of the good ones
Imitation of Life- original and great
It Happened One Night-Colbert and Gable sizzle in this.
It's a Gift- WC Fields...it's ok
Lost Patrol- I don't like this type of movie usually, but this one is ok.
Merry Widow-MacDonald and Eddy- it's ok.
Manhatton Melodrama- Fantastic movie with Loy, Powell and Gable.
Of Human Bondage- Great movie of the novel, with B Davis as a Crack whore.
Tarzan and His Mate- one of the better sequel attempts.
The Thin Man- need I explain how great this movie is?

1935
Mutiny on the Bounty- Mr Christian! See this movie.
Curly Top/Littlest Rebel- Temple gets to the top with these
39 Steps- early Hitchcock, but remember he filmed silent movies as well.
Swing Time- The tops!
Roberta- great Fred and Ginger, though Dunne ruins "Smoke gets in your Eyes" when she sings it.
The Raven- good horror flick
Dangerous- Bette at her best.
The Informer- Fantasic "guilt" movie.
Midsummer's Night's Dream- beautiful adaptation.
A Night at the Opera -Marx brothers, funny as usual.
Tale of Two Cities- beautifully done...but BORING.
The Whole Town's Talking- Great movie about a guy hiding in the attic, an attorny and the girl he's dating, etc.
Alice Adams- one of the Hepburn best, a heartbreaking film.

1936
Libeled Lady- Harlow is great.
Dimples/Stowaway- Temple now owns the box office with these.
Captain January/Poor Little Rich Girl -Temple again
San Francisco- wonderful film, Gable, MacDonald and special effects.
Petrified Forest- fantastic version of the play, Davis is great, and Leslie Howard is good...but Bogart steals the film as Duke Mantee.
My Man Godfrey- classic screwball - love it and own this one.
Show Boat- early version with Irene Dunne. Great movie.
Follow the Fleet - Fred and Ginger, at it again with a tap number to make you hold your breath.
Dodsworth- One of my tope five films of all time.

1937
Nothing Sacred- Lomabard and March -Great movie with a lot of action. Girl fakes illness for free trip/Reporter loves her/craziness ensues.
The Awful Truth- One of the top five best screwball comedies of all time.
Easy Living- Jean Arthur in this movie is a lot of fun.
Stage Door- that famous one with Ann Miller, G Rogers, K Hepburn, E Arden and a slew of other cats. Don't miss it.
Shall We Dance- Fred and Ginger...the tops, again.

That's enough for me! Of course, 38, 39, 40 and 41 are good as well.

The 1970s is widely regarded as the last Golden Age of American cinema, with Altman, Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola, Bogdanovich, Polanski, Scorcese, Fosse, Woody and Kubrick leading the way and already doing some of their best work. Some pretty edgy stuff for mainstream film.

It's too early for noches.
