4. American Beauty
5. Chariots of Fire
6. Chicagp
7. Clerks
8. Easy Rider
9. Fantasia
10. Field of Dreams
11. Forrest Gump
12. Gone With the Wind
13. Good WIll Hunting
14. Jules and Jim
15. Monster's Ball
16. Moonstruck
17. Mytic River
18. Nashville
19. The Red Shoes
20. The Wizard of Oz
Overall I think it's a pretty good list...although I would remove American Beauty and maybe 2001. I'm not really sure what the Wizard of Oz is doing on there either. I would probably add the Star Wars movies...
Anything you would take off..or add to the list?

it is impossible to overrate the WIZARD OF OZ. i hate FANTASIA, but i was not aware it was highly regarded in general. ron howard films make me hurl--except SPLASH. i also didn't know that Monster's Ball was so highly thought of as to be overrated. 2001 was a creature of it's time and out of that context it's never going to have the same impact. it is responsible for a shift in filmmaking and brilliant things that came after. NASHVILLE is genius and doesn't deserve to be next to MYSTIC RIVER, much less an overrated list.
just my opinion.

They should remove 2001, Fantasia, Gone With the Wind and Wizard of Oz as all were extraordinary films when they were released and deserved recognition. Premiere is on crack for not recognizing how advanced those films were at the time.
They can be replaced with Out of Africa, The English Patient, Titanic and Pulp Fiction.

Posted: 8/25/05 at 10:20amWell, the magazine isn't necessarily itself saying these films are overrated, as for each film they have a staff member writing why it is overrated, and another staff member writing a rebuttal pretty much dismissing what the other person said.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

That list is way off...Half of the movies i've never even heard of, and the other half I really enjoyed! My list would be:
Lord of the Rings (all of them)
Harry Potter (all of them)
Lost in Translation
Monster
Star Wars (all of them)
Spiderman
Shrek
Pulp Fiction
The Matrix
Kill Bill 1 & 2

I personally think "American Beauty" should be #1, but that's just me.
And "Citizen Kane" should take "The Wizard of Oz"'s spot.

While Citizen Kane is my ultimate in over-rated movies, more recent additions to the list are:
-Lost in Translation (just BORING)
-American Beauty (I don't get the love with Kevin Spacey...he is always just Kevin Spacey...he only adds a funny voice)
-Mystic River (a movie solely about Sean Penn trying to make himself cry)
As far as "Crash" goes, that was easily the best movie so far this year. Hands down.

Posted: 8/25/05 at 12:45pmTotally agree w/ American Beauty being on there but Field of Dreams?? Along w/ Little Mermaid, it's my fav movie of all time! Sure, it's not the critically best movie ever made, but...it just flows so well and there's not too many people, particularly ment that could make it through without crying. It's just such a fantastic, but family, spiritual story. I can't believe anyone would call it overrated, hrmph.

I really don't agree with Gone With The Wind and Clerks being there... those are two of my favorite movies, and I think there are many movies that have been so much more overrated...
I think the main one they missed was Ray.... I absolutely hated that movie and thought it was horrible...soooo overrated, especially jamie foxx's performance
