The Gay Brokeback Mountain Cheerleading Squad will be by tomorrow to form a human pyramid in this thread. We're too tired right now and we have to study.

Brokeback! WOOOOOO!

I have the same predictions as you, EXCEPT that Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix will win Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, in a Musical/Comedy. They don't have much competition, buzz-wise.

I'm most unsure about the Ledger-Hoffman, race, though. The others are pretty certain.

I think it's gonna come down to a hair. The critics' awards have been pretty split down the middle.

Hoffman has the reputation, but he's not running an Oscar campaign. Ledger is really getting his name out there, but his young age and lack of other prestige films on his resume will hurt him.

I'm gonna bet on Ledger, just because the Golden Globes do tend to award glitz a bit more. (That's not a statement against Ledger's performance, which I enjoyed more than Hoffman's.) For the Academy Awards, I think it's Hoffman's.

While I agree with these picks, it will be a surprise should Ang AND the film win. Director and screenplay rarely seem to match up with Best Pic winners.

Wow, yeah all but 2 avatars are Brokeback Mountain. Well now make that 3. To hell with the Gay Cowboy Cheerleaders, I am a one man ScarJo Cheerleading Squad. If she doesn't take the Globe and the Oscar for her fierce performance in Match Point there will be much gnashing of teeth and beating of breast.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

I will be absolutely devastated if Heath doesn't win the Globe. I would love for him to win the Oscar, but I am a little more doubtful about that one. He so deserves it!!!!!

The Globes are their own thing, often (Madonna for EVITA...), determined by press, not artists voting for peers.

The best indicator for the Oscars:

The DGA award for director.
The SAG award for actors.

If Heath pulls the SAG, I think the Oscar's his. Last year Annette Benning was deemed "overdue" for an Oscar but lost the SAG to Hillary Swank, and that seemed to seal the deal for the Oscar.

Thanks, Robbie. You're quite right. This looks like a tight race, then, down to the wire between Hoffman and Ledger. I do believe it's too easy to pick a winner from the one who has the better campaign. I'm not sure Ledger's fan base in Hollywood is that much bigger than Hoffman's. Hoffman has made many films, and been brilliant before (Ripley springs to mind).

I do find myself wondering: Did the folks at Focus know, in advance, that Heath's work would be so singled out? I think everyone is surprised how he has been praised so highly, independent of Jake.

Personally, on 2nd viewing, I found Jake the unsung hero of the film. Without his vulnerability, Heath's soticism would be in a vacuum. I think Jake could be the Zeta-Jones, or the Geena Davis, of this Oscars: a lead who gets the supporting trophy.

Agreed about Jake.

But SAG's nom for Hoffman for, of all things, Flawless, makes me think he's an 'actor's actor' in their eyes. Which may give him the edge.

And though it might be too easy, it may indeed come down to the campaign this year.

As for Jake, I agree. Though I wish he would have aged more physically by the end of the film (in walk and voice), it's still a very strong performance that could easily walk away with the award.

Yes, I said Cillian Murphy was gonna win. Every year they have a winner that sort of makes you go "WHAT?!?!?!" and he's gonna be it.

The Hollywood F. Press loves to be the first to go there, so I think the esoteric choices -- GARDINER and Clooney -- are unlikely. I could be wrong. But Zoneface is right, they love to find some oddities, the unexpected (the nom for Sarah Jessica Parker is already in that strange category. The only actor to land in that film, really, was Keaton.)

Speaking of which, I still say, Laura Linney in the "comedy" category is beyond strange. SQUID AND WHALE is no comedy, by any definition.

But am I alone is feeling Clare Danes got shafted this year? I thought she was wonderful in SHOPGIRL. Understated and really heartbreaking.

Remember, it's the Hollywood FOREIGN Press Association. And Heath Ledger is Australian. I think this could very much play in his favor! (At least I hope so!)
