Okay, this seems obvious, but thought I'd check with all of you film experts.
We are going to see Gravity over the weekend and am wondering if I can use the 3D glasses that came with our tv for the film. I assume all 3D glasses are the same, yes? If I can avoid putting something germy on my face during flu season, I'd like to have that option. Thanks!
Most theaters give you a new pair of glasses with your ticket.
The glasses are wrapped and brand new. They recycle the used ones.
I was told by a theater manager that those glasses that get dumped in the recycle bin just get re-wrapped and given out again. Is this not true?
Unless they have a sealing machine at the theatre, I don't see how that is possible. The plastic wrap is a sealed bag with a perforated end. Anyhow, if someone is a germ-a-phobe then just bring your Clorox wipes and wipe off the damn glasses.
Yeah he said they don't do it at the theater...they get sent out.
Personally I don't care about germs. I just wish you could bring your own and not pay the stupid surcharge for glasses every time.
I can check if they are active or passive (just like a date!)
Actually, the glasses that came with our tv are very comfortable and fit over my glasses, which is another reason I'd prefer to use them. I was kind of kidding about the germs.
And I dont want to have to bring clorox wipes.
I could see them sending them out to be rewrapped, but that's about it. And yeah, I think a clorox wipe would be good enough to clean them off, if you are really concerned.
As I said above, the germy comment was half in jest. The comfort is more imporant to me.
I did a bit of research and I assume mine are passive glasses as there are no batteries. They should be okay in the theater.
Oh sorry. I must have typed my response while you were typing yours and you got yours out before mine.
The 3D glasses are reused or recycled. The theaters ship them back to the manufacturers/distributors to get inspected to see if they can be reused. Any that pass inspection get sanitized, buffed up, and repackaged. That's why you sometimes have streaks on the glasses as soon as you take them out of the packaging. It's also why you sometimes have a pair that don't work at all--some idiots pop out the lenses ans flip them so the angles are totally wrong for the next user.

The glasses you get at the IMAX may be larger than the ones you have at home.
^ What Roscoe said, because your field of vision is a lot wider, the glasses are usually bigger.
Also, I'm not sure if RealD 3D works exactly the same as other 3D. From what I've read, it doesn't. Even though both are passive (polarized) formats, RealD (far more popular, but not as good) creates a dimmer image. The glasses almost look like tinted sunglasses, whereas "regular" 3D (IMAX and other formats) don't have the dimming issue. Images are brighter and more saturated. I'm not sure if the movies are adjusted to compensate for the RealD "dimming," in other words, they are brighter to the naked eye, so they look normal with the glasses, that sort of thing.
I think it would be best to use the glasses they provide, since they are supposed to match the screen and 3D format. They fit comfortably over prescription glasses, from what I'm told.
Thanks Besty...I will probably bring at least one pair to compare.
I saw Gravity on IMAX 3D and I have to say it was hands down the best 3D I've seen to date. I was amazed at how bright the picture was. No dimming issues at all. But that was with using the glasses provided.
There are no dimming issues with IMAX 3D or any other passive format.
Only RealD ... which still has the market share of screens and projectors in the U.S.. Oh, by the way, the screen is different, too, for RealD, which is part of the dimming issue (or so I'm told).
I haven't heard many people complaining about a dim picture in the past year, though, so that's why I think they might have figured out a way around it. Or people just got used to it.
When I saw Gravity I simply took the glasses with me
Do that next time & when they give you a new set of glasses unwrap them and toss them and use the ones you took originally and kept.
The 3D in the 50's were great. They were free and use them once and than toss them. They even had clip on 3D glasses as I found a pair in an old projection room I was in when I used to do theater crawls.
I would do that if I didn't have to pay the surcharge for glasses anyway. But since I'm paying the price what's the point of bringing old glasses?
You will not have any issues re germs. They will be your germs and not someone elses
