A pretty neat list from EW. It includes the obvious choices like the fabulous Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Hellen Mirren, and Emma Thompsom, but it also has some nice unexpected surprises, including a number of stage actors and up-and-coming TV/movie stars: Mary-Louise Parker, Kristen Bell, Cherry Jones, Jeffrey Wright, Rosario Dawson, Amy Adams, and others.
I disagree with some of their choices like Nathan Fillion, Will Ferrell (ugh), and a few others, especially since the likes of Sally Field, Salma Hayek, Al Pacino, Natalie Portman, Matt Damon, and Toni Collette weren't included.

Kristen Bell was the first name that came into my mind; nice to see she made the list
Bet they don't have my choices.
*goes a-hunting for Bruce Campbell, Philip Quast, and Geoffrey Streatfeild*
I definitely disagree with Will Ferrell, but I'm glad to see Rosario and Christian Bale on there.
The only one I think they should have mentioned is Jim Carrey. I would definitely watch him in anything.

Jim Carrey hasn't made a good movie since ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND though.
I like Paul Rudd but he wouldn't make my top 50.
I'm glad Laura Linney and Kate Winslet were on there though.
I don't know...I kinda liked A Series of Unfortunate Events. But yes, many of his recent movies have been pretty horrible.
I heard he will be playing Robert Ripley in a new movie though, so I'm excited.
In the history of filmdom, I might be able to come up with 10 actors I'd watch in anything. None of them were on that list.
I am plesently suprised by some of their choices (Regina King, Joseph Gorden Lovett) but I would have included Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Oh

My list would have to include:
Marcia Gay Harden
Cate Blanchett
Brenda Blethyn
Judi Dench

Blethyn and Collette were not included? How sad.
Mrs R's choice is John Glover.
True, Sandra Oh should have made the list. I'm just glad they didn't necessarily go for all the big celebrities (Katherine Heigl, Jessica Alba, etc) and actually included a lot of talented people that are not really that well known.
I'm surprised Blanchett wasn't included.

It's been forever since I've seen Tom Selleck in anything. Is he still at it?
Robert Downey Jr popped into my head first.
and of course, my fave camera-shy 70s counter-culture icon.^^^^^
Paul Rudd makes my top 10!

Not too long ago, I had the opportunity to see Jane Alexander - one of my all-time favorites - live, for the first time. Someone asked me about the piece I'd be seeing, and I replied, "I've never heard of it - but it doesn't matter, since I'd watch her read the phone book."
Well, the piece turned out to be an embarrassment - complete with the reading of a grocery list (which was singled out by critics as the highlight).
I no longer think there is anyone I would see in anything.

phone book, grocery list, samey samey.
sounds like you got your wish?
I'm missing Stockard Channing, Vanessa Redgrave, Judi Dench, Toni Colette, and Maggie Smith. What gives?

"What gives?"
These lists are created by very young interns who have no real reference point. Some of the people on this list are ridiculous choices. The interns have no real concept of great acting.

I think this list says more about the crap the writers watch than it does about the talent of the actors.
If Maggie Smith is not on the list, it has absolutely no credibility.

Sorry, but even Jude Law couldn't make me sit through COLD MOUNTAIN again.
I will actively avoid movies with that Philip Seymour Hoffman person in them.
Tom Selleck? Where did this come from? Did his publicist pay off EW or something?
I would only ever willingly sit through Mos Def's appearance in his own snuff film.
I am glad, though, that the sublime Jeffrey Wright made the list. Somebody out there's paying attention.
