Seems like all awards will be controversial this year, not just acting, directing and film, but art direction, score, costumes, makeup, special effects, etc.

Films scheduled for release to be eligible for 2006 Oscars:

ROBOTS
CHICKEN LITTLE
CARS
STAR WARS, EPISODE III
BATMAN BEGINS
FANTASTIC FOUR
CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
HARRY POTTER & THE GOBLET OF FIRE
KING LONG
THE PRODUCERS
RENT
HOUSE OF D

And I'm forgetting several others!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Yeah, Brokeback Mountain starring Jake Gyllenhaal and some guy named Heath. (Release date pushed to December to get some Oscar buzz)

...and The Brothers Grimm starring Matt Damon and some guy named Heath.

KING LONG? Oops. Meant to type KING KONG. Freudian slip - of the finger?

I know THE PRODUCERS has new songs. Are new songs being written for the film version of RENT?

War of the Worlds
All the King's Men
Shopgirl
Ask the Dust
The Interpreter
Kingdom of Heaven
A History of Violence
Prime
The White Countess
Manderlay
Elizabethtown
Bee Season
In Her Shoes
Jarhead
Walk the Line (Perhaps a win for Joaquin Phoenix?)
The New World
Cinderella Man

Are new songs being written for the film version of RENT?

Nope. Rather, there are a few cuts here and there, but the big songs are in... possibly with the exception of Contact.

I'm also kind of intrigued by Memoirs of a Geisha. I've never read the book, but I must.

You forgot Proof.

I am SCARED by the idea of Memoirs of a Geisha. I've read it 7 times, and I re-read it once a year. The language is so poetic, I'm afraid they won't be able to capture the timbre on film. But, I'm hopeful.

Don't forget Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. This is going to be a good year.

There's The Fountain. Aronofsky always gets critical attention.

Of course, I'm paying attention for entirely different reasons, but that's just me. :)

And BEUWOLF & GRENDEL.

Though I have to say a lot of the films listed look like good prospects for box office popularity but not Oscars. That whole "children's stories, sci-fi, and fantasy are ignored or ghettoized" thing.

I don't think it's too early to say I'm going to be spending an obscene amount of money at the movies this year. And that I wish movies would always get released on the same day worldwide, because I might be out of the country come fall, aka Good Movie Season. That list is pretty damn impressive...

Lots of people even into last November were saying 'Alexander' was the front runner for Oscar glory, too. Then people ACTUALLY SAW 'ALEXANDER.'

Let the movies come out, people.

But most of the epics this year don't seem to have half of the production problems that "Alexander" had.

Bareback Mountain looks pretty good.

But seriously do you really think there's a need to include the Star Wars movie as an Oscar contender?

"But seriously do you really think there's a need to include the Star Wars movie as an Oscar contender?"

Ha! Those days are gone. I'm sure that "Sith" will be better than "Menace" and "Clones", but that's not really saying much.

I'm excited to see this, but also scared. The trailer is creepy.

PS - While Robin Williams was hysterical (what else is new?), I agree that "Robots" was okay.

Definitely NOT too early to speculate. I predict BEUWOlF & GRENDEL so suffer the exact fate as ALEXANDER.

I predict CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY will get Art Direction.

ROBOTS was OK - however I look forward to Williams' HOUSE OF D. Looked EXTREMELY good - an Oscar Worthy TRAILER! However, trailers are often deceiving. Still, sometimes you can just tell things will be great.

I predict acting, writing and directing nominations for THE PRODUCERS.

Visual Effects definitely for STAR WARS III.

NOT too early to speculate.
