Sending a bulge shot to another consenting adult is nobody's business but the people involved. It's the puritan, American idea that sex is dirty that even makes this an issue. He should be allowed to swing from the ceiling in leather straps, covered in jelly, if he wants to without having it affect his electability. I'm sure there are just as many people who erroneously see my sleeping with men as a case of bad/flawed judgement and reason not to be elected. The question needs to be, what kind of mayor will he be? period.

Does anyone remember Italy's Ilona Staller... a.k.a. "Cicciolina" which loosely translates as "Cuddles"
As a teenager I remember hearing (and seeing some pictures) of her campaigning topless for the Italian Parliment. I found the picture I recall from years ago with her topless in a car but am not posting it or the link so as not to offend.
After WINNING the election the male members of the Italian parliament renamed her, "cicciolini", translating loosely as "little tubby boys".

I'm not sure I see merit in comparing the degrees of stupidity/venality of actions of various disgraced (or semi-disgraced) public leaders.
I do feel that leaders of men ought to be held to a higher standard of virtues than the herd they lead - intelligence, honesty, morality, etc. Not that they are held to that standard, but I think they ought to be. Our leaders should be better than average.
Did Wiener's picture hurt anyone? No, but it betrays a certain vulgarity of character. Spitzer's use of prostitutes, while he condemned prostitution, showed that he's a hypocrite, capable of dishonesty.
The word "character" has taken on a tang of elitism; many of us enjoy the entertainment factor of having leaders with all the gravitas of Snookie; but there's really nothing wrong with expecting more.

newintown... no insult to you as your comment is very true but we could run down a list of 'esteemed' politicians who have done SO much worse than what Weiner has done. Yes you cannot compare them - but we do. Politicians and sleeze go hand in hand as does the proof that they are merely human in trying to cover up their scandals. They are no different than anyone else and I think it would be difficult to find a virtuous politician with the higher standards and calues that you hope they might have.
Prime example is Ted Kennedy... drove drunk, did not assist another human being, Mary Jo Kopechne, from drowning, left scene of the accident...still held on a pedestal as a crown prince of American politics when he dies. Proof of what money and who you know can accomplish.

The problem comes from determining who gets to decide what a "higher standard of virtues" is. Who is to say that a bulge shot between consenting adults is any more or less virtuous/vulgar than heavy petting with someone on your couch? Moral judgement is a slippery slope. And you can't hold elected officials to a higher moral standard without making a moral judgement in the process.
Hypocrisy is a completely different story.

As scandals go, this was is a .00001 on my scale. I could not care less that he sexted. Knowing the man that he is (and while we're not BFFs, I do actually know the man), I was deeply disappointed, that he didn't just say "Yeah? I showed my penis to a woman who wanted to see it? So whaddya gonna do about it?".
That he lied about it was my issue - but I even get that. He was thinking (if you'll pardon the term) that he would just balls his way through it.
He's a good man. He cares deeply about this city. He gets things done.
He definitely has my vote.

I agree as I haven't quite figured out perfection. That in a nutshell is why I have no political aspirations. I'm hopelessly human.
Back on topic, NYC and SC-at-large are two drastically different markets. It's been 25 years since the GOP in SC has lost a GOP-held seat in the House so they held their noses and backed Sanford. For the GOP it's always about winning elections at any cost and consolidating their power. As long as Sanford was never caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy he could recover, after a spell in the wilderness and playing his god-card. His record as a fiscal conservative, repentance of his sins, and a safe GOP-district got him over the wall.

I don't live in NJ so it doesn't directly affect me, but before his "scandal" (and I use that word loosely) he was my favorite politician. He was one of the only people I saw in Washington who could equal the fervor of the right but on the correct side of issues. His rants on the Senate floor were amazing - he was one of the only people I saw who actually spoke what I believe (Bernie Sanders being an example of another).
His "scandal" was ridiculous. At least as far as the public knows, he didn't actually DO anything that terrible. As far as we know he didn't cheat. He didn't lie about cheating. He didn't spend any money in an inappropriate way. He made a mistake. I honestly thought he'd get a scolding and that was about it. I should have known better.
I would absolutely vote for him if I had the chance. Given that he didn't do anything illegal, there's no reason he shouldn't be able to run.

I don't know if I'll vote for him or not. I'll have to watch his campaign and see where he stands on the issues that matter to me in NYC.
But, I don't particularly like him or respect him. And I think respecting our elected officials is important. I agree with newintown on this.

Except Bernie has had more free-reign as just a caucusing member since he is an Independent socialist in the Senate and also actually has an actual record beyond being on a soap box. Don't be too fooled. Weiner comes more from the Chuck Schumer school in terms of being the party mouthpiece and his more moderate bona fides would have been made more aware had he not left the House. He is a politician but as a legislator (and to Schumer's credit he has also a pretty substantial record on getting bills passed) he has almost no record.
I don't really care about his scandal but why are we acting like this guy is the second-coming of Russ Feingold for the Democrats?
