First of all, if you were FOR Prop 8, I really don't care what you have to say. Not one bit. Sorry, but that's the truth! You're getting exactly what you deserve now. I just hope it's not too little, too late. I have a feeling you're in for a big surprise from our not-so-quiet LGBT community.

However...

I've seen a few people posting here who have said they are Mormons, and they were AGAINST Prop 8.

I'm curious... Have you been taking a lot of heat from your church? Did you let them know? If so, are you being excommunicated the way my gay Mormon friends have been in the past? Are your families not speaking to you? Are you feeling "persecuted" from both sides of this issue?

Or are you a "closet" supporter of "No on 8?"

And... how do you feel about your religion now? Why have you chosen to stay with a religion that practices "hate" to such an expensive and extravagant extreme? A religious organization that gave many millions of dollars to a political initiative in another state to deny civil rights (yes CIVIL, not religious) to a specific group of people.

I know that obviously if you were AGAINST Prop 8, you already feel this way about the initiative and the shameful way it was handled by your church.

But you say you are Mormons.

I'm curious to know what you're thinking right now.

I asked Donny and Marie Osmond and they refused to comment.

They are both for prop 8 and also against it

http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/the_awful_truth/b66995_morning_piss_prop_8_osmonds_me.html

"But isn't it ironic that my husband, Jon (who's a recovering Mormon), and I picketed some Mormon churches this weekend—he put the pics up on Facebook—and next thing you know, a member of the most famous Mormon family of them all, the Osmonds, contacted Jon and said right on, complaining about how intolerant her own clan is?

This, while on the official family Osmond blog, it's clearly stated to vote yes on Prop 8. Just goes to show, don't believe everything you read. "

No way to know if it's true or not, I suppose, but that Osmond story is pretty interesting.

As a gay ex-Mormon, I have been discussing the issue, rather heatedly, with my devout Mormon parents. They honestly feel that if gay marriage is protected by law, they will be in danger of, one day, having to marry gay couples (INSERT *GASP*). I've been trying to tell them that I know of NO gay couple who wanna be married in a creepy 'temple' but they just won't listen. But that's the issue it comes down to. They really feel that they are fighting for their rights and that, if everyone were calm and decent to LGBT members, gay couples wouldn't need rights. True Story.

Yeah its pretty unbelieveable. They (as a church) want everyone to know they're still NICE but they kinda don't wanna be reminded that there are queers around.

'You're so nice. You're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice...' (sorry. couldn't help myself lol)

I think the name for 'reformed Mormons' as a whole should be "Reformons."

It can't be easy for someone who has been raised all their life to believe certain things... to be at odds with the people of your own church and the "church" itself.

But I wonder how/why some have chosen to stay with the faith, when you clearly don't share some of their major, "critical" beliefs.

I also wonder why these people think anyone would FORCE them to marry same-sex couples! Or force them to accept gays in their church. If it's not in their beliefs as a religion, they don't HAVE to do it.

BUT... even if it's not in their beliefs as a religion, it is NOT their place in our society to dictate what the beliefs of others outside of their faith should be.

That's where they are fundamentally, humanly and (yes) morally WRONG.

They don't have to like that I'm gay. They don't have to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony either, or have their "faith" recognize a gay marriage. But they can't deny us the basic LEGAL rights of marriage under the protection of our shared government.

This is where they have overstepped their bounds. A clear breach of "separation of church and state."

And quite frankly, they need to back the hell off... or face a little bit of "hate" thrown right back squarely in their sanctimonious, collective faces.

No holds barred, either. They're getting exactly what they deserve now.

And (back to the original subject of the thread), that can't be easy for some of you who are both Mormons (by birth or upbringing) and are also agreeing with me that this is VERY wrong.

I don't envy your position, and I know it can't be easy.

I guess there are two roads:

1. Leave the church.

2. Try to educate your fellow members and make it very clear that you don't agree with what they have done. (And good luck to staying in the church or even speaking with them for very long.) That's the stand up and fight road. For as long as you can, until you're thrown out.

I grew up Mormon also.....I am friends with several of my sisters on facebook and when they saw that my default pic was of me picketing for prop 8 , a few of them left comments letting it be known that they are voting yes on prop 8! I didn't respond but I did find it a bit uncalled for. What I am really dreading is Thanksgiving. Its my parents 50th anniversary so, I am going to be in a lodge in the mountains with all 8 brothers and sisters and their kids!!!! Good God!!! I know the subject is going to come up,and when it does, I am going to just leave the situation! The subject really gets me heated!

After watching that video of Father Michael Barber, my comment was "That was DISGUSTING." I won't post what my husband said in response because this thread would be deleted.

I want to say something meaningful here, but I am literally speechless.

Where's beacon1 at? Can somebody unpry her metaphorical vagina from the theoretical Patrick Wilson and summons her to this thread?

I personally long to hear from her.

Why don't the Mormons realize the radical Christians hate them every bit as much as they hate the homos? If they're worried about anyone wanting to infringe on their religious freedom, they should be fighting the dominionists, not cuddling up to them because of their mutual loathing of gays.

The James Dobsons and such are being nice to the Mormons right now just because they're useful at this point. They'll be back to calling them hellbound cultists in a few weeks.

I know asking for rational thinking from a religion founded by a guy who believed in moon men (long after science knew that was ridiculous) and such might be a bit much, but come on. It's worth a try.

The priest in that video supporting the Mormons and Proposition 8 has a blog called "Singing in the Reign." I tried to read some of it, but it seemed like a foreign language to me. I am just so completely out of touch with "lordspeak."

I love how he quotes the guy saying anyone who voted for Obama will burn in hell. If anyone in San Diego is looking for the next spot to protest, his brainwashing school might be a good target.

I just realized that this guy is NOT a priest. That's even creepier. Plus, he just spawned a "Junior." It's surreal. It seems like a joke, similar to a website I remember reading a couple of years ago that was about a fictional ultra-conservative Proestant Church in the midwest. (I forget its name.)

Here is something I just copied from one of his blog entries:

From October 29, 2008 Blog Entry :

Hear Bishop Finn's interview here. Here's an excerpt:

Chris Stigall: There are Catholics listening right now who are thinking strongly or are convinced that they will vote for Barack Obama. What would you say to them?

Bishop Finn: I would say, give consideration to your eternal salvation.

Can you BELIEVE that?

Think again.

Sounds to me like they have a serious chance of losing their 501(c)3 nonprofit status in the United States, based on these very clear rules.

And nothing would make me happier right now then to see them go down.

Enough!

And the Catholics had better watch their step in this country as well, unless they want to entertain the notion of paying enormous taxes as well.

Wouldn't that help turn our ailing economy around? To have millions of dollars paid to the U.S. government for the "privilege" of having one's powerful political voice heard.

Back the hell off. If you spend a substantial amount of money (aka millions of dollars) to influence legislation, you're a lobbyist. And you no longer qualify as a nonprofit. Pretty simple to understand.

I abhor the tax-exempt status for religion ANYWAY - and that has nothing to do with whether or not they are politically active. It's a waste of our group resources.

Well, Q, I have to disagree with you there. I am a big supporter of the separation of church and state.

But apparently the Mormons aren't.

Fine enough. Then they need to get ready for the gubm'nt. They should be knocking on that big temple door with a whole slew of questions for them very soon. And lots and lots of paperwork.

Yes, lots.

And get ready to dig into those sacred vaults for every dollar allocated in the past 7 years.

Oh, this should be fun.

"I am going to just leave the situation!"

what the heck does that mean??? Say nothing...wimp out? THAT is exactly what has gotten us to where we are.
You need to make it clear this is NOT ok........i we continue to say nothing because it's family or "supposed" friends, NOTHING will ever change.

For your sisters to do that was cruel and hateful......

Once, years ago, my sister gave me one of those tiny books christians hand out "The Gay Blade"

I read it in front of her, ripped it in half and told her if she EVER gave me anything or said anything like that again, I'd stick my hand down her throat and re-arrange her vial organs......and she never did.

You must set boundaries with people like that......or else you denigrate yourself and all of the reast of us who fight to change this.
