I hear, in the book, the author points out his various flaws much more than Sean Penn did.
I would agree with that, but I wouldn't ever use the phrase "extremely stupid" to describe him.

Glad "Before the Devil..." is on the list. Saw it in an art house a month or two ago...was it ever in wide release?
I don't think so. I saw it at an Art house as well and I was waiting for the wide release to see it again, but I'm still waiting.
A pity, I wanted to see Tomei's performance all over again. The whole film is superb.

I saw BEFORE... in a multiplex.
I think an interesting thing about that film is that it had no comic relief whatsoever. Even really serious dramas nowadays have at least a bit of gallows humor to slightly lighten the mood. This movie had none of that. And it worked perfectly.
Seriously, was there one joke in the entire film?

...I couldn't take the robbery scene seriously because I live across the street from the shopping center where it was filmed.
Not much of a joke...but all the old people in the theater screaming "I KNOW WHERE THAT IS!" at the screen was pretty amusing.
