AMERICAN IDOL
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1650
Posted: 4/21/09 at 8:51pmI loved Kris and Allison. I usually love Adam, but I was not wild about this one........I guess I'm going to have to go back and listen to it again and again to see if I just missed it the first go.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1651
Posted: 4/21/09 at 8:52pmI have to agree with Simon. That was Anoop's worst performance yet.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1652
Posted: 4/21/09 at 8:53pmSNL, I was kidding cuz Tarantino had no business being there. But Randy Travis and Smokey Robinson were mentors this season. I hate that whole mentor crap.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1653
Posted: 4/21/09 at 8:56pmLOL at Anoop's new facial hair and eyebrow waxing.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1654
Posted: 4/21/09 at 8:57pmHaha, clever, see, I completely forgot about Randy and Smokey! Usually the mentors offer no real insight or mentoring anyway. They are just a talking head. And yes, Tarantino was a total WTF choice.

I am getting through for Allison way too easily!!

Adam was good and all, I just felt like it never really went anywhere. I also feel like he had to do the slowed down bit tonight, because the people who only like reserved Adam Lambert were majorly turned off by Born To Be Wild.
I think Allison was my favorite tonight. Then Kris. I just started listing them in order from favorite to least, and noticed when reading it back that I completely forgot Danny Gokey.
Lil is the only person I think fully deserves to go, without question. Between Matt and Anoop, I think I'd prefer Anoop going. But I'd rather Matt go than Allison or Kris. (I'd rather Gokey go than anyone, but I'm not stupid and I know that has more to do with bias than objectivity.)

Allison's performance was a little off putting to me considering her age.
She's 16 singing lyrics like "I've had about a thousand lovers" and "Lookin' for some hot stuff."
Does she deserve to go home? Absolutely not, but this was not my favorite.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1658
Posted: 4/21/09 at 9:19pmI'm an Allison fan, but not tonight. It wasn't the lyrics that bothered me, it was her voice. I didn't like the arrangement nor the performance. I still think she'll be in the final top 3.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1659
Posted: 4/21/09 at 9:25pmKris was my favorite by far. Allison and Danny were ok...the rest were seriously bad. Adam was beyond bad for me, he screeched one half of that song and whined the other...it was a mess.

I have to say that tonight is the first time that I actually liked Adam.
I've always thought he was talented and probably the clear front runner for the competition but tonight was the first performance that I can honestly say that I would purchase. Up until now each week he's given great performances but none that I would care to hear again.
I also liked his make-up plot...or lack thereof.

Adammmm gah, SO amazingly beautiful <3 I will say that I am still waiting for him to switch it up a little from this rocker-subdued-rocker-subdued pattern he's got going on, because it IS actually getting slightly on the predictable side. But honestly, who cares? It was a GORGEOUS arrangement of the song, and his voice sounded so stunning!
Plus, he looked so freaking gorgeous tonight! FLOVE the shorter faux-hawk hair and the clean little-makeup look
Kris was also fantastic tonight as well. Reeeally loved that arrangement!
I personally though Allison's performance was hot. Not my favorite of hers, but def cool!
Everyone else.. oy

Lil's mother was pissed tonight! I was trying to read her lips and figure what was saying but the only word I could make out was, "...white".
I honestly felt so bad for Lil tonight...week after week actually. You can just see the disappointment on her face when she gets her feedback and it's not what she thought it would be.
She had such promise going into the competition and just lost her way.

re: AMERICAN IDOL#1663
Posted: 4/21/09 at 10:01pmI think they did Lil a disservice by always overstating her talent. Her enunciation and phrasing are atrocious, her rhythm is poor, and her pitch is inconsistent. Instead of constantly harping on her song choices, or "originality", they needed to have been telling her these things. (Perhaps in a more constructive way than I just did, but still.)
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1664
Posted: 4/22/09 at 7:32amI completely agree Craww. I just never got what all the raves were about with her. I did feel bad about the judges constantly telling her "we just don't know YOU as an artist". That really was the least of her problems.

I felt bad for Lil, but only because she looked like she was going to burst into tears. Otherwise, I think (I hope!) we get to say goodbye to her tonight.
I like Matt, and I generally liked the concept of what he did last night. He's just having some problems executing it...but I still hope he stays!
Love Adam, as usual. Paula's expression during his performance was priceless.

So I just realized that the lyric that Allison sang that bothered me turned out not to be "I've had about a thousand lovers..." but rather "I've dialed about a thousand numbers..."
I heard something completely different last night.

LOL!
Yeah the former is a bit disturbing at the ripe age of 16.
I dunno...I really really like Allison....and I thought she was good last night, but I wasn't completely drawn in to her performance like I wish I had been. Maybe it's just me?
PS- I finally get Kris. He was amazing last night! Loved him!

This blogger at EW.com was spot on about last night's show. I particularly enjoy his thoughts on Danny...who I am soooo over.
"...all I could think while the bespectacled dude lumbered around my screen was: 'WHY IS THE MAN YELLING AT ME?' I mean, seriously, listening to Danny sing is like going bowling with someone who throws the ball overhead. So what if he knocks down all his pins? He's all brute power and no finesse. Not to mention that at this stage of the competition, Danny has yet to truly have a 'moment' in which he reinvents a song, not structurally, emotionally, or otherwise."

Also, what was with the whole, "You shop in the women's department" thing?
Maybe I tuned out for a sec, but I think I missed it.
Or (and this seems more likely) that Paula had a Paula moment (ie. where nothing she says makes sense.)
Watching Simon's face while Paula speaks is amazing. His expression says it all.
re: AMERICAN IDOL#1671
Posted: 4/22/09 at 11:54amTom, that assessment of Danny is spot on.

Yeah, that assessment is definitely spot on! haha. Michael Slezak tends to be really correct on these things :P
I actually have to say, his assessment of Adam is almost exactly how I felt right at first:
"The evening's most radical song retooling, however, came immediately after 'Hot Stuff,' in the form of Adam Lambert's balladic rendition of 'If I Can't Have You.' In theory, I liked the idea of what Adam was going for: By stripping away the song's disco façade, he'd be cutting to the heart of the sad-sack lyric ? 'If I can't have you, I don't want nobody baby.' Unfortunately, Adam also washed away much of the gorgeous melody written by the Brothers Gibb and sung by Yvonne Elliman for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, and the performance had the slightly dissatisfying quality of an otherwise tasty meal that was pulled out of the microwave about 30 seconds before it should've come out. Sure, the vocals were immaculate, as Simon noted, and Adam looked great with his shiny black suit, mile-high pompadour, and giant snake ring, but the experience wasn't entirely satisfying.
I'm wondering if (and secretly hoping that) next week (since he's clearly not going home this week!!!) Adam will choose to shake up his now predictable pattern of manic one week, tragic the next. Sure, it's impressive that the guy can go from zero to 100 in three bars or less, but I'd like Adam to keep challenging himself, and show us he's capable of reaching the gray areas of tempo and emotion ? not just the black and the white."
And in fact, I do still kind of agree to an extent. But I think that pretty quickly after the performance, I started appreciating it a bit more that I did right at first. I think I just felt like something was a little bit off because I'd never heard the song done before that way, but then with a little perspective I appreciated it for how freaking PRETTY and emotional it was. But even still, it's not my favorite of Adam's "tragic" performances (that would go to Mad World)

Loved Kris and Allison last night. I thought Kris outshone Adam by miles simply by providing a new arrangement and a fresh take on the song without compromising the the melody and structure. Adam's If I Can't Have You was choppy, overwrought and almost completely unrecognizable. His agonizing emotion was appropriate for the theatre (and provided the motivation for more signature shrieking), but I found it WAY over the top for a music popularity contest. The only thing missing was the tear streaming down his cheek. Personally, I found his emotional display to be far more overblown than the complaints Danny-haters have been making in the last month.
Lil and Anoop were just dull and I didn't get the Matt love from most of the panel. AWFUL song choice and he really didn't add much to it. Staying Alive was nothing more than a popular dance tune and it really couldn't be mined for much more than that. Danny was solid, but at least he didn't sing anything for which people could accuse him of exploiting his wife.
Lil is definitely going home, which is sad because I thought she showed much promise in the beginning. The other will either be Matt or Anoop. It's pretty much a toss-up between them. If Allison goes home, there is something horribly wrong. She should be in the finals.

Since I'm not really vested in this season, I just watched some clips now. I agree with Mr. Matt...Allison and Kris were the best.
I'm just not feeling the Adam love. Great song but yeah, it was very overwrought. Allison and Kris provided fresh new perspectives on their choices, but all during Adam's performance, I kept wishing he's speed it up...such a great melody completely lost in that arrangement. I recognize that he has a lovely singing voice when he's not screeching, but otherwise, he's too hokey for my tastes.
Speaking of hokey Gokey, I have two words: Taylor Hicks. Bleh.
The rest were just boring to me. Shouldn't "I'm Every Woman" be banned by now? Anoop bored me to tears and Matt is just very average.
