Yes, nitsua. Yes I do.
But first, I would make him dinner--roast chicken with garlic eggplant stir-fry and broccoli risotto, chased with a light dessert of mocha gelato in chocolate toffee sauce.
Only about 9% of this food would be eaten off plates.
Whew.
Okay, so charges dropped? *thumbs up* Great.
(tazber, I did try posting but it didn't work, so this was the second try)

Posted: 2/5/08 at 6:25pmIs it usually male models that A&F uses when they go for the live model thing? I'm just realizing that I've never seen a woman out there, just GORGEOUS men.

My problem with these ads is they reinforce the idea that you have to look a certain way to be beautiful and accepted. Ridiculously skinny women with huge breasts and men who have cobblestone abs...
The reality is most Americans will never look like that and cannot look like thst due to their genetic makeup.
o feed those images to children from a young age reinforces the idea of you have to be the homogenized version of beautiful to be accepted and happy. Do I think Madison Ave. folks will change? No, but I support the right of parents to reject the propaganda of having to be lucky enough to have an ideal face and physique to be happy.

I think that comparison does not relate as well because of the overwhelming pervasiveness of idealized bodies in media and in print.
How often do we see an "average looking" happy person in the news? Most unattractive photos we see are of people who have done something wrong. (When was the last time you saw a good mugshot?)
Abercrombie is not interested in art. It is interested in selling clothes and getting people to think that they need to fit the A&F mold in order to sell those clothes.
If I wanted to expose children the beauty of the human form I'd rather take them to an art museum or exhibit. I want them to have a true appreciation for the human form which is not merely limited to carbon copy look alikes. In my opinion, the beauty of the human form is in its diversity.
EDit: I don't have a problem with attractive people. I have a problem with their endowments being used by themselves or others to tell others that this is the way you need to look to be happy. I think it is something like 90% of communication is nonverbal. To underestimate the power of pictures and words is foolish.

Ivan showed me a cover of the JCrew catalogue and he was noticeably bigger than the other models. He still had a nice body, but he wasn't as thin as the others.
A&F is targeted to under 25 crowd. Usually, they're the athletic guys and girls that have the good bodies. They look like the models.
Or do the models look like the kids who wear the clothing?
Would A&F still be in business if it didn't cater to these kids?
(Since I'm not the subject of age, people over 30 shouldn't be allowed to wear A&F. It looks ridiculous, no matter how well it fits.)

I'm not going to say my opinion won't change as I learn more as I get older. My thoughts are just based on the kids I interact with regularly. I'm still not all that far into adulthood (I'm 23 so many here would say I am still just a kid.) I am also not saying there are any perfect answers.
The ideal would be more active and supportive parents, families, and communities who make sure their children understand their own value separate from what the media and marketing in our world idealize. Physical beauty is just one aspect of a person and their worth in society. It increasingly seems that it is the only aspect of a person that our society values.

Posted: 5/5/08 at 4:32pmlast month i was at roosevelt fields mall and did a double-take as i walked past the a&f store. what i thought was a shirtless and barefoot mannequin standing in the doorway was actually their greeter. what tipped me off that it was some form of live creature was the way it mindlessly gyrated around inside the opened doors laning in towards everyone who came in the store. my wife asked, "why's there a crazy half naked person dancing in the doorway of a&f?"

Posted: 5/5/08 at 4:57pmsonofagun- I absolutely agree. I'm 19 years old and have felt immense pressure to try to fit my body to an unrealistic ideal. I don't think that all adults perhaps realize how much pressure ads and the media can put on this age group.
I have even had a rather young track coach who refused to shop in A&F or Hollister. She told us (the team) that it was the only clothing store where she could not fit into a size small. Furthermore she said something to the effect of: if she tried to shop there she would most likely have some sort of a breakdown and end up starving herself. She was obviously not being completely serious but she was not completely joking either.

Posted: 5/5/08 at 5:06pmI guess I'm glad that I've never felt defines by the labels on my clothes- either brand names or sizes.

Posted: 5/5/08 at 5:16pmI'm sure if this has been said already (too lazy to go through every post on this thread) but I also think that part of the problem some parents may have with the pictures posted by A&F is not necessarily the amount of skin that is shown but the sexual undertones of the pictures. This, in my opinion, can be sensed not only by what is being shown but by the body positions of the models themselves.

Posted: 5/5/08 at 11:57pmVirginia Beach has these obscenity laws. Theyre rather strictly enforced, actually. Breasts must be covered between the top of the nipple and the bottom of the breast. Butt cracks cannot show. and obscene words are subject to fines (70 dollars for the first curse word 5 dollars for every word after that) and this is neccesary for Virginia Beach because it is heavily dependent on tourism and in the early nineties lax obscenity laws meant millions of dollars in lost tourism because families didn't want to bring thier kids somewhere they didn't feel safe. The posters were displayed on the OUTSIDE of the store in hte biggest mall in Virginia Beach. This mall is frequented by more kids than you could ever dream of tourists and locals. People were complaining. I know it sounds ridiculous but there was a reason why action was taken, not jsut to blow hot air.
