The uptight parents? Hmmm I wonder how many gay teen boys have taken that catalog to the bathroom and locked the door.

I call it the dime slot.
And I agree with SNAFU.

"Let kids be kids."
Exactly-there seems to be a lot of childhood innocence missing these days. It's a shame.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:34pmIt's more than the crack, though. That lady's tit is hanging out. And it's highly sexualized.

"The uptight adults are the ones who get titillated and then project it on the kids."
Like I said.. hmmm, the uptight parents?
These imagines are specifically designed to sexually titillate their target audience. You may not think that is using sex to sell products to children is offensive, but I do.

A&F doesn't print anymore catalogues. I think we have the last issue.
I used to take the Sears catalogue into the bathroom. I've always had an underwear fetish. Should Sears stop selling underwear?

Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:39pmNo they are not but the oversexed straight teens will do the same thing to the Victoria's secret catalogue. It is a part of growing up and discovery.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:42pmLOL, for that matter, you might as well go into the bathroom with a Macy's, J.C. Penny, or K mart catalogue. Don't they all sell underwear?

Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:43pmI may be complete off here, but I don't think the target audience for Sear's and Victoria's Secret are the 13 to 17 demographic.

This thread reminds me of an interesting book.
I share part of a review:
Why hate Abercrombie? In a world rife with human cruelty and oppression, why waste your scorn on a popular clothing retailer? The rationale, Dwight A. McBride argues, lies in "the banality of evil," or the quiet way discriminatory hiring practices and racist ad campaigns seep into and reflect malevolent undertones in American culture.
McBride maintains that issues of race and sexuality are often subtle and always messy, and his compelling new book does not offer simple answers. Instead, in a collection of essays about such diverse topics as biased marketing strategies, black gay media representations, the role of African American studies in higher education, gay personal ads, and pornography, he offers the evolving insights of one black gay male scholar.
As adept at analyzing affirmative action as dissecting Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, McBride employs a range of academic, journalistic, and autobiographical writing styles. Each chapter speaks a version of the truth about black gay male life, African American studies, and the black community. Original and astute, Why I Hate Abercrombie & Fitch is a powerful vision of a rapidly changing social landscape.

and this perfectly explains why so many Americans are SO uptight about sex....and pass it on to their children, keeping this country so screwed up about sex.
this would not even be an issue in Europe......
this is NOT an issue,,,,,,,,what IS an issue is that you are teaching your children to be disgusted by the human body.......ridiculous

I don't necessarily object to the ad in question, but some of the ones posted on the front page were a little too much. It's not seeing a naked body, it's the sexualized way the images are presented. And since A&F does have a young demographic, I do think it's a little inappropriate.
America does have a problem in dealing with sex, but there is a line, and some of those ads (to me) crossed it.
And the fact the manager was fined was ridiculous.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:54pmI guess it's all a matter of opinion. I'd rather see almost any other part of someone's body than their a** crack. For me, that's not erotic, although to many people it is.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:58pmYeah, I don't know if I agree with you on that, Elphaba. I DON'T think the human body is shameful, but I think there are different kinds of nudity.

Yes. I agree America does have a problem with sex and Madison Ave. KNOWS IT. They take advantage of it. I think that is offensive.
Like I wrote. If Parent's discussed sexuality and body parts as early as possible with their children it would would go further in protecting children from preying advertisers using sexually charged imagery to push their useless products and phony lifestyles.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 10:20pmI find the picture less upseting than the fact that many people wear their pants even lower than that. I'm living in Michigan, and it's winter. Don't they feel a little breeze back there or something?

But again, that's all a symptom of something bigger. I'm in agreement with Elphaba that this country has some effed up issues with sex, but I don't think that hypersexual ads for clothing are really helping matters any. As for people hanging out of their clothes in public, isn't that really a form of passive-agression? As someone has exhibitionist tendencies, for each part "I'm just free about my body!" there's an equal of "I'm just trying to make YOU uncomfortable!"
