I have never been a A&F fan. The fact that they are racist organization is enough to make me abhor them.. but add to that... they market their porn disguised as advertising to hormonally crazed teens and young adults. I find it very disturbing.

These pics are porn ??? Have you ever SEEN porn ???
And what's wrong with parents acting naturally and explaining to their kids, that what they are seeing are perfectly natural parts of the body, that everybody has. Except genitals, which can raise sexual and inaproppriate questions for a child, why demonize other parts of the body ? Well-informed children turn out to be the most well-rounded adults ! Strictly raised and uninformed children turn out to be sluts !

Well... granted I may not have seen as much porn as you have...
But come on! Those ads aren't meticulously designed by Madison Ave execs to promote quality clothing! Those ads are designed to illicit a sexual response... a very high sexual response at that! And that TO ME is pretty much the objective of porn.
Maybe not behind-the-curtain-at-the-video-store-porn, but a version of porn.
You wouldn't even know they were trying to sell clothes if it weren't for the A&F logo!
As for parent's responsibility to discuss sex and body parts, that is a Parent's duty as it should be.
Be we are talking COMMERCE here and these RACIST A&F people are taking advantage of a the most sexually sensitive and confusing time in a human being life to push their products.
If when you have children you want some racist clothes manufacturer to shove sexually suggestive images in the faces of your children in order to make a profit. That is your choice. But don't be surprised if TRULY responsible parents want to decide when, how and for what reasons they want to discuss the idea of sex and body parts with their children.
Don't get me wrong, I love the human body.. I love sex. I think children and adults should be comfortable, respect and love their bodies... but you can't convince me that these ads are anymore than a cheap, exploitative, Madison Ave selling tactic.

Don't make me tell you how many times you've pushed A SONG FROM THE SOUTH on this board. You have no right to talk about race.

The models are sexy and I'll be sexy if I wear the clothes, right?

For what it's worth, I think she always brings Song of South up ironically.

Porn is supposed to arouse people. At this time and age I don't think anyone can be aroused by the glimpse of a buttcrack or the upper part of a breast, that's my opinion.
I agree about the sexual innuendo. But almost EVERYTHING nowadays uses sex to sell, why blame only one company ?
And you make my point, unwillingly ! Sex AND body parts are a responsible parent's work for you. SEPARATING sex from body parts, that's responsible for me ! Talking about sex to a young child is certainly taboo and shouldn't be done. Talking about the body is natural and should be encouraged ! My opinion.

Maybe. But the whole thing is pointless since the manager has absolutely no say in what signage or displays go up! All of that directive comes from corporate. That the MANAGER was fined is ridiculous.

Yes Nitsua... I have pushed Song of the South.. but NOT because I think it a great film.. I think it is a horribly racist film.. and I am throwing that in the face of everyone on this board that thinks it is some charming old story of happy contented negroes.
Go back and read what I posted on race and race relations on this board and you will know what I mean.
Now.. knowing how A&F behaves when it comes to race issues...if you continue to buy from them and wear their products you are pretty much saying that you agree with them..
But of course that dosen't matter to you, does it?...So what if they have racist hiring practices?... They have hot pretty boys half naked in the window!. Woo Hoo!... equal rights don't mean shet if hot naked boys are involved!
Madison Ave is playing you like a puppet!
Grow up!
You can't pull the "you are the real racist" card on me buddy...

"equal rights don't don't mean shet if hot naked boys are involved!"
Depends on how hot the naked boys are LOL Just kidding, don't jump on me again.
I didn't know that A&F have racist hiring practises !
Now, THAT is a much stronger point against them, than the "Their ads are porn" Christian-right argument !!

They would hire people of color but only for the stock room where they could not be seen by the public.
Now..since they lost the lawsuit you may see some "token" people of color here and there. But they are doing it unwillingly.
There are better places to buy your clothes.. and if you want to see pretty naked boys... go the 18 and over section of your neighborhood magazine stand.

While I don't feel as strongly about it as BFB, I do see her point. I'm all for pushing the envelope, but I'm not really sure what envelope A&F is eveb trying to push.
I dunno. I'm a different breed of man, I guess. I don't need to surround myself with erotic images of men when I'm not actively seeking an orgasm. I look at porn when I have an itch to scratch, but I don't get going to see strippers, or guys who have magnets of half-naked guys all over their fridge or in their avatars, etc. I'm not judging, because I'm clearly in a minority, but I just really don't get excited by half-naked when I'm out trying to buy a pair of jeans.

While we own A&F, we haven't bought any in at least 2 years. Our tastes have matured to Lacoste and Ralph Lauren.
The managers don't really have a say in what's put in the store. That comes from corporate. The company itself should be banned, not the manager. Don't shoot the messenger.
Were Hollister, American Eagle, Victoria's Secret charged too?
I hate double standards.

I'm no lawyer, but maybe it has to do with the manager refusing to do what the cop said?
And while Victoria's Secret is certainly objectifying the women in its ads, are they as overtly sexual as the A&F ones are? Are their butt cracks hanging out? Are they showing 90% of their breasts? Again, I'm not in fighting this fight, but I can kind of see where the distinction gets made.

Thanks for sharing that, Phyl.
I guess I get all riled up because I can understand why a parent wouldn't want to have to deal with that when shopping at a mall.
But I also see that parents have to address issues of sexuality and body with their children as early as possible, otherwise these Mad Ave. leeches have too much power with their sexually charged images.
...also...
I come across dozens and dozens of beautiful gay boys who have subjugated their natural god-given creativity to the god-of-HOT and just waste their time, money and talents to live as if they are a A&F ad.
I love my gay boys. I hate to see them strive for something so pointless.
#43re: Abercrombie & Fitch Store Mgr Fined for Pic
Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:12pmAlso.. are there any Victoria Secret Stores at that mall? Do they have sexually explicit images in their window? I dislike double standards too.
#44re: Abercrombie & Fitch Store Mgr Fined for Pic
Posted: 2/4/08 at 9:12pmSo children shouldn't be subjected to the truth? You want to lie to them and say that what's natural is shameful?

If a company wasn't trying to sell sex in association with their clothing, then they wouldn't feel the need to put up posters of models exposing "just enough" T&A.
Hey, sex has been selling since cars were made!

I think it is hysterical that a little butt crack is looked at as overly sexual. I think kids looking at that would giggle because they got a glimpse at someone's hiney and leave it at that. They aren't going to sexualize it. The uptight adults are the ones who get titillated and then project it on the kids.
Damned I seen more crack on a shoe salesman fitting shoes or the handyman fixing my closet door (albeit not quite a nice as butt crack as in the A&F ads).
What is we called it butt cleavage? Perhaps it would seem a little less dirty?

Well, we don't really know what all kids would think.
I know what I think when I see a butt crack-how gross. I prefer people didn't feel the need to let us all see theirs.
