Mayor Eric Adams just added $2 billion in new spending expansions at the end of his term, raising the city budget to $118 billion and leaving Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani a $4.7 billion deficit with no plan for looming federal aid cuts, @thecityny reports.
Budget analysts warn that Adams is not leaving a stable city for Mamdani. He is leaving a massive financial hot mess.
The Citizens Budget Commission says the administration is underestimating costs by $4.7 Billion. CBC President Andrew Rein says this confirms that Mayor-elect Mamdani’s first budget will need to close a $5–8 billion gap, and still fund Mamdani’s priorities like free childcare, free buses, and 200,000 new affordable homes.
Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and finance Chair Justin Brannan called the move by the mayor “irresponsible.”
On top of that, the Trump administration is signaling that it may pull back the federal aid New York City relies on every year
Adams is just pressed because he got caught and then he got, like, 12 votes. They both suck and NYC will decline even further.
