African American Men and Shaving

I am asking this because I really want to know, and I hope I don't get called names.
I was recently on the bus and the gentleman sitting in front of me and SOMETHING growing out of the nape of his neck, right at the base of the hair line.
It was about the size of a tennis ball, cut in half.
I've seen this before on other AA men, and was wondering what causes it?
I took a picture but I don't want to post it.

This might be an extreme case of pseodofolliculitis barbae which is fairly common in African American men. It happens when someones hair is shaved and the cut strands curve back into the skin. I've never seen it as large as half a tennis ball though.

I had an ingrown hair a few months ago...my beard is curly, which is why I dont grow one...and I kept trying to get rid of a smudge on my cheek...finally, I took a tweezer and pulled out a long hair growing into my skin.
What? Too much information?

If this is an ingrown hair, it's HUGE!

Because I HAVE to know! I?m fascinated!
The papparazzi that was chasing Drew Barymore through Farmers Market had the same thing, but his looked like a pack of hot dogs working it's way out of his brain.

I don't think it has anything to do with him being black though.

As I said, I have only seen this type of growth on AA men.
If I see something like this on a white person, it's usually been like a sack of fluid. This looks like scar tissue.

It's a keloid. I know someone who had it in their head from getting into a car accident, but it can happen anywhere.
It has nothing to do with being black.

Is there anyone on these boards as immature as me who remembers that kid from Fairly Odd Parents who had the giant boil named Bob with a personality of its own?

"It has nothing to do with being black."
actually, it does. Black people, or for that matter, anyone with a high pigmentation level factually and statistically have a higher likelihood of getting Keloid and other skin-related problems of this type. It is medical fact
from wikipedia:
"There is a fifteen times higher frequency of occurrence in highly pigmented people. It is speculated that people who possess any degree of African descent, regardless of skin color, may be especially susceptible to keloid occurrences."
by boyfriend who is black had a keyloid on his left ear. very minor, but he hated it and it was simply removed through a tiny surgery. And he backs me up that it affects his race more that it does mine.
Keloids are racist.

uncageg,
Please note that there is no way of identifying him. I would never have just put up a shot of his face.
But, this has really been one of 'those' questions I have never gotten an answer to.
Thanks for the info.
