This morning in a small airport in CA, the TSA airport security people had to run my purse through the xray machine 4 times. They couldn't figure out what was in it that was bothering them, so they had to empty the entire bag. Finally they pulled out a swiss army knife that I've had in there since summer (used the scissors to cut friendship bracelet string). They confiscated it, but as this was my return flight to NYC, I realized that I got through JFK security with it on the way to CA. Makes me a little uneasy about how careful airport security screening really is...

what airport Liotte in CA?
Airport Security really has not changed at all.......it still sucks.
Here in Palm Springs, when we left for Seattle on Thursday, they ran my partners carry-on through 3 times........trying to figure out what something was. Then they searched. What they were concerned about was a box of small UNOPENED jars of jelly, from Harry and David, that was a gift for my Dad. Amazing that jelly is a problem, yet your knife makes it on to a plane in NYC.....

It was at the Monterey Airport at about 5:45 this morning. I'm glad they are thorough, but if they aren't like that everywhere, it doesn't do anything.
When I was 8, I was visiting relatives in NY and they gave me a nintendo for a gift. I was flying by myself back home (CO at the time), and when I tried to get through security, they wouldn't let me through because of the bright orange plastic gun from Duck Hunt that comes with the nintendo. They held the plane for 30 minutes while they dismantled the whole damn thing, then let me go board. I cried. Stupid security.

Posted: 11/29/05 at 10:47pmThey confiscated my nail scissors, nail file and tweezers from my luggage when I flew back to school Sunday. The thing was, they were all buried in my checked suitcase, not in my carry-on. I don't understand how tweezers underneath the plane are such a threat to national security.

skittle I have never heard of that either. I always carry mine in checked luggage, and never was a problem.
Monterey is nice, Liotte......used to go there a lot when I was growing-up in San Jose.

Haha, awesome thread title.
Wouldn't plucking the pilot's eyebrows just give him better visibility? I'd be making the flight safer for everyone!

HA!
No worries about security, folks, I lost my sewing mini-scissors (read = 3/4-inch blade) and cross-stitching (read = blunt) needles to airport security when I flew to London.

Y'know, I just don't get that. How are you going to hijack a plane with nail scissors? Especially nowadays. If you pin someone so you can cut their throat with the scissors (highly unlikely), you've pinned them so you can snap their neck, too. And you can gouge someone's eyes just as well with your fingers as with a sharp object. Friggin' ridiculous. A pen could be more deadly than blunt scissors. And anyone with half a brain could kick a hijacker in the nuts if that's all he was armed with.
My nail scissors and blunt craft scissors got through just fine going to England; I'm not sure how I'd react if someone tried to take them.

Posted: 11/30/05 at 9:25amI'm not worried about what passengers are carrying nearly as much as I am about the cargo that the planes are carrying. I saw a report a couple of weeks ago that said that all commercial airlines carry cargo with the luggage and most of it goes unchecked. How scary is that?

I was amused on my recent flights to and from NYC that the airports had hyper tight security, but then gave me (and all the other passengers) a "snackpack" that contained a 3 inch plastic knife with a serrated edge.

I went through 3 security check points heading down to Myrtle Beach last week and I carried tweezers & a nail file in my purse. No one stopped me at all.
I brought the latest TSA list with me in case any screeners asked questions.

Posted: 11/30/05 at 12:41pmI fractured and dislocated my wrist in Paris and British Expressway and American Airlines make me remove my sling and splint every time I walked through security. They checked my splint for explosive chemicals. It's not that I'm ungrateful for airline security, but I wonder what people with prostethic limbs have to remove.

Oh, I forgot one! Last year in FL, I got a smoothie and it was in a plastic cup. They wouldn't let me through security with it, apparently the cup can be torn to have sharp edges. They made me go back and get a paper cup before I could get through. Ridiculous.

Posted: 11/30/05 at 2:41pmPre-Sept. 11, my dad used to always carry a huge antique pocketknife with him at all times. He never got it confiscated until we were flying out of LaGuardia once -- they wrapped it in a box, checked it and the box came through the baggage claim empty. But the fact that he flew for however many years with that thing and only got it taken away once shows how much things have really changed.

Posted: 11/30/05 at 2:53pmWe were travelling for Christmas a couple of years ago. My mother had a carry-on full of Christmas presents. One of those presents was a beautiful manicure set. Dang, if they didn't rip open that present and confiscate the scissors...they ignored the nail file, though. Go fig.

The summer before 9/11, on the way to our family vacation, we brought a sharp kitchen knife on board accidently. It was in side pocket of a cooler for cutting apples. No one even said anything when my mom cut me an apple with it on the plane. Great job, Newark Airport!
Since then, I've had several nail files and a set of small scissors confiscated. Go figure.
