Alice Munro wins Nobel Prize for Literature

The wonderful short story writer becomes the first** Canadian and thirteenth woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. If you haven't read her work, now's the time.

**Second, if you count Canadian-born American Saul Bellow.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Did they ever reach her so they could tell her? As of this morning, the award committee hadn't been able to get in touch with her.

Yes. She's given a comment, which is available in the link I posted.

Nothing beats Doris Lessing learning about her win from a reporter on the street:
"Oh, Christ"

Atwood tweeted a link to a piece she had written about Alice Munro's work, which is a good introduction to those unfamiliar with her. I've read that Munro's publishers in the US, UK, Canada, etc. are eagerly set to republish her short story collections, as the Nobel win will result in a huge increase in book sales.

Alice Munro: an appreciation by Margaret Atwood

In Munro's work, emotions erupt. Preconceptions crumble. Surprises proliferate. Astonishments leap out. Lurid crimes, hidden sexual excesses and strange rumours lurk beneath the surface respectability in Alice Munro's short stories. Fellow Canadian Margaret Atwood on how these tales of small-town Ontario elevated Munro to 'international literary sainthood'

She is incredible. Richly deserved.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali
