yeah i want AMC to keep it in too. though if they brought back the gay teacher it'd be the gayest soap opera ever.
Who was the gay teacher, I'm trying to remember.
i think his name was Michael. he taught the Holocaust to his classroom and came out and then everyone flipped out

For a soap, AMC has always been fairly progressive with social issues...talking about abortions, birth control and rape when they were still taboo subjects. I remember when Donna Pescow portrayed an out-of-the-closet lesbian back in the '80s, and they had a really moving storyline involving AIDS (Cindy and Stewart *sobs!*).

folkyboy, that might have been Erica's brother-that was many many years ago, if I'm correct.
Chris Bruno played the gay teacher back in the late 90s:

yeah that's the one i was talking about. although that link didn't work for me
I just remembered-Erica's brother's name is Mark. And he is a gay character, I don't remember if he was a teacher. Doodle, the link didn't work for me.
I don't recall Mark being gay. I just remember him having a drug addiction problem that cost him his marriage to Ellen.

I thought Bink's storyline when she was dealing with the rape and her pregnancy was incredibly well written. The baby switch story was inane, though. AMC has plummetted in the last year and a half..ever since the baby switch was resolved. They threw a ton of new characters into the fray and just bounced them off each other. Ryan and Greenlee - The Married Years - was when the show jumped the shark.
"and for the writers, what big music star would change genders mid career?"
This IS a soap Opera we are talking about, right?
That gave me a laugh.
Sorry about the link, all...not sure what the problem was...here is Chris Bruno's imdb file with some pics:

There are still lingering baby identity issues and they are getting tiring! Everyone's baby should be put in social services, imo...they are terribly neglected kids! And I hope Dixie never finds her brat...how annoying can one character get?
Oh, so he's not the one who played Erica's brother. I don't even remember him. Oy, and I"ve been watching the show since the day it started!
I wasnt watching at the time, Jane, but it seems he wasnt on very long.
see Janey that's the problem..if you got your fat ass off the couch and excerised istead of watching soap operas you wouldn't be such a fat fat fatty !!!
Oh, exercising is a thing of my past, boobs. Not gonna happen!

Jane, I always thought that Mark looked like an older, nebbishy version of Bruno from Fame!
AMC in the '80s was the best. Jenny and Greg, Tad and Liza, Angie and Jesse, Cliff and Nina...
Yes, it was! I always thought Nina was so beautiful-and resembled her father on the show, too.
I guess my favorite years were the Phillip and Tara. I know, I'm going waaayyyyy back!
I go way back with you Jane. I've watched from Day 1, also.

I can't remember all the characters, though. Thanks god there are a few of the originals left.
I usually just lurk on this site, but when you start talking about the decline of my favorite soap opera, I had to jump in.
That being said , I think the show jumped the shark when they killed off Gillian. It was the storyline that lingered forever and a day. Cameron (Ryan) and Esta (Gillian) both made announcements proclaiming that they were keeping Gillian on the show, but the odds ended up showing different. To me, I started getting turned off when they started randomly matching up Ryan with different women after she left. However, I started buying Ryan and Kendall, but even THAT got screwed up at the altar. This show just doesn't know when to let sleeping dogs lie, in my opinion. "General Hospital" works because it keeps enough of it's originals around. You can barely recognize "AMC" these days with all the new faces.

I miss Chuck and Donna and Benny. Phoebe was at her best when Chuck married Donna the hooker. Those were the good days at AMC!
