Oh the girl who sang route 66 looked crushed...i actually feel really guilty for watching these beginning episodes...it's like people like to watch people get crushed....and yes i didn't like the guy who sang unchained melody...he seemed really really cocky

The paratrooper and the scooter girl were the best. Of course, something like 20 people got through the NYC audition, so we did not see a lot of who passed the first round. I thought for sure the paratrooper would make it, she had such a great personality and a very strong voice.
PEACE.

Paratrooper should have passed. I wonder if they are wanting to avoid the whole military thing---maybe there were problems last year? Who knows?

I LOVED Scooter Girl!! She would be fantastic on Broadway, but she has the chops to pop. They said the same thing about Clay a million times. And, Simon is right--her humor is what will help her stand out in this often humorless music scene.

I don't know how I've lived throuh the past theree years without ever having watched a single epsidoe of AI.

I have an AI realted question. Does anyone know, is there a term for that annoying style of singing that almost every contestant seems to use? The one where instaed of holkding a note (because you are in capable of it) you slip in extra notes and give the song a "Soulful Sound"

re: e: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re:

It's called riffing and its based in the r & b style, blues and jazz. I don't especially like it either but there's no reason to assume it's because the singer can't hold the note, there's just not much reason to use *that* style of singing in pop music.

re: re: e: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re:

When I hear an R&B singer do it or a Blues singer, I assume it's being done for style. I assume it's because the singer can't hold the note when it's done in a pop song that is being performed by a skinny little white girl with a voice that is obviously very weak, especially if her initials happen to be BS. This accounts for a large number of singers out there. It's obvious that theyare doing it becuase they can't sustain a note and not because of style like, let's say, an Etta James or Nina Simone.

the (over)use of

Thanks Orion. I've had it with that increasingly self-indulgent style, too. That sound -- which above I called vowel-extending -- isn't it, rather than a jazz riff (which imports much more soul), "melisma"? Jon Pareles, rock critic of the NY Times did a long piece on the overuse of melisma last fall, tracing it back to the Whitney/Mariah technique. ("...a group of notes or tones sung on one syllable ... melodic embellishment or ornamentation...") For me, it's far more Mariah than Whitney. And I'm REAL tired of it. "Ornamentation" is in the ear of the beholder.

It makes every song have the same emotional weight, which in turn makes every female singer who employs it have the same emotional POV on every song. It has taken over pop music, and unless a singer is really adept, it just attenuates a melodic line. To no end.

It disturbed me to see the 3 judges so quick to embrace someone who employs it in a borrowed, neutral way. I'm glad to see others here agree on the paratrooper girl. She just sang, with control and purpose, yet all 3 immediately thumbs down.

re: the (over)use of

I agree its generic and uninspired and fake. But most of the people doing it are basically talented singers attempting a popular style. No reason they can't hold the note, it's just an assumption based on disliking the style they use. Come on, most of us are singers here, holding a note is not hard and doesn't prove anything more than bad riffing.

re: re: the (over)use of

I actually like that technique when it's used properly. I love jazz and blues and have heard singers such as Billie Holiday or for a more contemporay reference, Diana Krall, use it. It adds something to the song and gives it certain style. When I watch the promos for AI and see someone doing the song Black Velvet and over using that technique, it sounds terrible. That first AI winner Kelly Clarkville, or whatever her name was, put out a song that was entirely in that style and sounded awful. I'm just sick of hearing it in pop songs.

What about tonight? "Proud Mary" girl is our new Frenchie. I thought she was great. I'm starting to feel bad for these contestants who actually think they've got talent and end up crushed.

re: re: re: re: re: re: the (over)use of

WHAT is with these people?!?!?! I personally think they all STUNK. I thought the first girl (she reminded me of christina fadale) was cute and good..but, the last "kim caldwell" chick was trashy and i agree with simon she was all text book and skanky. I hope another guy wins this year. (I liked the Elvis dude)...but , that kid was freaky the one who had his dreams crushed who cried...it was like if he had a weapon he would of took everyone down.

I, too, am very disappointed in the A.I. turn out so far...esp. in NYC! What happened? They all sounded awful. Is it me or aren't you surprised no one attempted a broadway song?!! Esp. in the NYC auditions...I would have loved to have heard something!

From what they said at the end of the show, it gets worse tomorrow in Houston!! But I have to admit, they are funny! But come on, I think the talentless ones must have beens "faking it" or just "acting it out." I think all 3 judges realized it.

I don't think this will be a successful A.I. Actually, I'm hoping this is the final one.

So far I've been dissapointed in this season's crop of talent, even those who have made it to the next round in Hollywood. It's been, even with Simon's barbs, dull.

And Skooter Girl is obnoxious.

"did anyone see route 66 girl..that was some funny stuff"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA You mean Scat girl? LOL I am not kidding when I say this...I went to Highschool with her! Her mom is a religion teacher in the highschool. It was an all-girls school and man was she constantly made fun of in her time there. I remember when she was a fresman (I was a Junior) and she entered the school talent show. She did a number from the Broadway musical Footloose and I couldn't even laugh right away because it was so bad. My mouth just kind of dropped open like, "I can't believe she thinks she's good?"
Then there was the time she dressed up for Halloween. Some of the seniors were being Disney Princesses and they let Jackie join in. She dressed up as the little lion cub princess from "The Lion King 2." It was repulsive how tight that outfit was on her. I pulled out my old video year books yesterday and my friends and I had a good laugh. LOL

*Yeah, I'm going to hell for making fun of her.* lol But I was actually nice to her in hs. I wasn't friends with her, but I didn't torcher her like most of the other girls did. I just kind of minded my own business.

Theatrebaby, I don't think you should have mentioned that story on this board. In a way you are making fun of her by describing to us her ways in high school.

You know, the worst thing is wanting to do/be something when you can't. Obviously there are kids like that who probaby don't realize what they're doing, and they think they're doing it well. The girl probably just wanted to perform because it makes her happy.

I knew guys and girls in high school who did the same, and got laughed at. I really felt bad when I saw them cry, only because I realized that THEY didn't understand what they were doing.

I really applaud them for being courageous enough for entering the talent shows. There are constructive ways for telling a person they're not good. We do forget those ways on A.I., only because we assume it's a show and it's purpose is to entertain us.

I remember one girl in high school who was very similar to this one. The bad thing is that she got hit and slapped by guys in school! Guys would just walk by and they would slap her on the forehead, just for fun! And the worst thing is that NOBODY would stick up for her. She was loney all the time.

So when I hear similar stories I really get upset, only because I witnessed these things in my high school, and I did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to stop it.

re: the (over)use of

There is really only one word to describe American Idol:

SCHADENFREUDE! re: the (over)use of

To be fair I'll go back and edit that other post and take her name out. But I don't thnk it matters if I tell that story about her in HS. 500 other people witnessed it with me.
Truthfully I blame the parents. It's one thing to encourage your children as they are growing up; but once you realize, "Hey, they're really not good at this," then I think it's time to tell them the truth and point out other things at which they do excel.

I was not the most popular girl in highschool...I was also not the most unpopular; but I have had my share of being teased. It's what you get out of it and how you react to it that makes you who you are. If one chooses to ignore the teasing and let it sit in them the rest of their lives, then that's their own fault.

I think it's very nice that singing makes these people happy. Hell, singing makes me happy...but I know I'm not great at it, therefore I do not go on National television and make a fool of myself.

re: re: the (over)use of

I think it was nice of you to edit her name out. I'm sorry, I don't mean to make this a big deal...well, I didn't mean to accuse you of anything. We all have difficulties or problems that make us stand out. It is not right to make fun of people, but we all have been made fun of during some point of our lives...and I don't think it's wrong to put yourself out there. I don't think I would have the courage to sing in front of Simon, because I don't have a good voice, and I do take things personally...and maybe cry! (I know what can I say!!!)
I think you develop courage and thick skin, which is something we all need every now and then.

The only issue I have with A.I. is that you can't really just pick ONE good voice. I think this sort of competition is useless. Everyone has a distinctive voice. Truthfully, can you really choose between the voices of Barbara Streisand and Mariah Carey, lets say....or Celine Dion or Whitney Houston...do you get my point?

I think all these competitive shows, reality shows, are way out of line. But what can you do?

Anyway....no hard feelings! :)
