Posted: 1/21/04 at 9:57pmThis blows, I haven't seen anybody I've loved! Last time, I knew Clay would be my favorite the entire time. Same with Kelly. This time, I think it might be that girl who sang "Proud Mary". Sidebar, she DOES NOT sound like Macy Gray.

After seeing three nights of American Idol, I was dumbfounded when tonight's episode was over. I was speechless (which, if you knew me, you would know how dumbfounded I was by NOT having anything to say).
So many thoughts ran through my head during the past few nights. I definitely commend these people for going on TV to try to get discovered, but I don't know if that is everyone's intention.
There MUST be people on there who know they are not good and just go on to get on TV. I feel really sad when they seem to really think they have talent, but they are actually talentless.
I myself really really enjoy singing, I have a passion for it, but I know that my enjoyment for it is a lot higher than my talent at doing it. I guess that's why I don't go on the show.
I know that sometimes Simon can be a little harsh, but the thing is some of these people need to have someone be direct with them, because obviously a lot of people have either dodged people being direct, or the people they are around were afraid to hurt their feelings.
I guess the moral to my story is that in previous years, I used to only want to see the less than stellar people audition. This year, that seems to be all we are seeing. Be careful what you wish for, I suppose.
I'm sorry for writing what I hope won't be too terribly exhausting a response, but I just wanted to talk about my take on the show.

Posted: 1/22/04 at 12:34amOK Well I just talked to a crazy friend who waited in line 3 days in NYC to audition. Apparently there are 3 rounds of auditions you have to get through before you get to Simon Randy And Paula....so I guess The producers just let these awfull people through for entertainment value. I have to wonder if some of them are actors or whats going on, because I can't imagine people that horrible thinking they are going to be stars. It's really wrong!lol

They didn't show a lot of the people that passed--seemed like they showed more last year (before LA). So, we mostly saw bad ones and a few of the ones that made it.
Plus, I have heard that a lot of great singers don't make it through to Simon, Paula, and Randy. I have no idea why. I know of a guy in Houston who is a fantastic singer who did not make it through to them.

Posted: 1/22/04 at 6:10amI'm really dissapointed in the talent so far. Is it also just me, or do the judges seem to be letting people go to Hollywood on pure hope that they'll improve?

Simon admitted on the View that they (the people who judge before Paula, Simon, and Randy see them) do allow some really bad ones in for ratings. I think it's mean to get their hopes up like that...allowing them to pass three times and then be humiliated; but my God it's funny! ![]()
I can clarify that Scat girl really is that bad in person. She was not acting.

Posted: 1/22/04 at 5:10pmI was at the audition in Houston. Stayed over night and everything. There were lots of people in line that were awesome. Several people that I heard sing were even better than the top ten from the first two seasons(none of them made it past the first cut).

I agree that it is a shame to get peoples hopes up only to dash them down. And then to belittle them on top of it. I can't honestly say that I blame that one guy who threw that water in Simons face. Not everyone can take that kind of nasty treatment.

Posted: 1/22/04 at 10:20pmWell, I mean it's one thing if a person is auditioing for the first time and they are told they aren't good. But these people are letting these God-Aweful singers get further and further, allowing them to think they actually have a chance, and then they are humiliated on national telvision because they have to perform for the official judges after being told by 3 different sets of judges that they are good. Meanwhile there are (like you said) very good singers who are turned away without even having the chance to audition in front of Paula, Randy, and Simon.

Some very bad singers are let in instead of some amazing singers before Paula, Randy, and Simon for entertainment value. It's unfair both to the bad singers who get their hopes up only to be crushed, and it's unfair to the really amazing singers who are not given the chance because "good is boring."
Btw, who is your icon of, Theaterbaby?

That is a glam shot of a young Madeline Kahn.
Most likely from the 1970's; but I'm not sure when it was taken.

Posted: 1/23/04 at 6:39pmI never saw any of the shows just bits & pieces here & there. My wife is hooked on "The Apprentice" & I do admit to finding it an interesting way to kill some time. Trump's hair is a WMD

Posted: 1/23/04 at 6:43pmLOL Have you seen on Letterman when they play "Trump or Monkey?" hahaha they have three pictures where the contestant can only see the hair on top. 2 of the pics are of Trump, and one is a monkey. The contestant has to pick the monkey. The contestant I saw picked Trump. lol

Posted: 1/24/04 at 9:34pmMy aunt auditioned for AI, and she is an amazing singer. She didn't even get past the first audition. She sang Summertime from Porgy and Bess. I am disugusted that they let all these people in purely for entertainment value. It's sick.
