"Bush signs bill creating electronic prescription monitoring

WASHINGTON - President Bush signed into law a bill to create electronic monitoring programs to prevent the abuse of prescription drugs in all 50 states.

The new law creates a grant program for states to create databases and enhance existing ones in hopes of ending the practice of "doctor shopping" by drug abusers seeking multiple prescriptions. It would authorize $60 million for the program through fiscal 2010.

The bill, signed late Thursday at the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch, was sponsored by Rep. Ed Whitfield, a Republican representing Kentucky's 1st District."

Of course, this in NO WAY should be construed as more government interference in our private lives, because that's what Republicans are against, isn't it?

I wonder if this will help Rush with his personal problems, since he doesn't waste time going through those official perscription channels.

This bill is, and you should pardon the expression, pissing in the wind. Is "doctor shopping" a problem? Sure. But those inclined to enhance their supply of 'desirable' prescription drugs can easily do so on any one of dozens of online prescriptions sites. For a price, a 'real' MD will write a script for whatever it is that you want. I couldn't believe it, so I tried it once. And yep. There it was a few days later, delivered by UPS.

A bigger problem than who is overindulging in Xanax or Vicoden, are the millions of people who can't afford the medications that they need. My 85 year old mom needs medications that aren't covered by Medicare or her supplemental coverage. Things that will help keep her cancer from recurring. Just this week, she had to charge $ 156.00 for a one month supply of an uncovered medication that will hopefully slow down the progression of her Alzheimers. She has little savings but owns a modest little house and squeaks by on a pittance each month even though she worked her fingers to the bone all her life. Yet she has too many assets to qualify for any assistance. I am paying for her Meals on Wheels. I am paying, out of pocket, for a homemaker to stop by and help her take a shower and wash her hair and do other odd jobs. I don't resent doing it for my mom, but I DO resent how Medicare and other senior services are being ravaged. And I panic when I think of what is happening to Social Security.

Doctor shopping is by and large a white collar problem. Once again, Bush focuses on protecting the "haves". The "have-nots" be damned.
