And yet another reason to be a vegetarian...

Woman eating chili bites into human finger

March 24, 2005 | San Jose, Calif. -- A woman bit into a partial finger served in a bowl of chili at a Wendy's restaurant, leading authorities to a fingerprint database Thursday to determine who lost the digit.

The incident occurred Tuesday night at a San Jose Wendy's restaurant and left the customer ill and distraught, said Joy Alexiou, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clara County Health Department.

"She was so emotionally upset once she found out what it was," Alexiou said. "She was vomiting."

Employees at the Wendy's store were asked to show investigators their fingers after the Tuesday night incident. All employees' digits were accounted for, officials said, adding that the well-cooked finger may have come from a food processing plant that supplies the company.

"All of our employees have ten digits," said Denny Lynch, a spokesman for Wendy's International Inc., based in Dublin, Ohio. He said there have been no reports to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of injuries at any supplier of chili ingredients to Wendy's.

"By law, you can't hide that sort of stuff," Lynch said. "All of our chili suppliers report no accidents."

Investigators seized the remaining chili and closed the restaurant for a few hours late Tuesday.

Health officials said the fingertip was approximately 1 1/2 inches long. They believe it belongs to a woman because of the long, manicured nail.

Alexiou said the woman, who asked officials not to identify her, is at minimal risk of contracting illnesses from the finger.

"It's an extremely low chance because the chili was cooked at a very high temperature that would have killed anything in the finger," Alexiou said. Still, she said health officials would ask the woman's doctor to test her blood "to make sure nothing got passed to her."

Wait a second? How in the hell did a finger get into chili?

I just watched Saw and I am slightly disturbed by this. Thank god I can't eat meat tomorrow.

Yes yes, I was raised Roman Catholic and I still do all that good Catholic stuff like not eating meat and all that ****.

But I don't really believe in any of it...

(Sorry Gunn. Am I totally disappointing you tonight?)

Well some Catholic is better than none. re: And yet another reason to be a vegetarian... No worries littlefish. If we ever met in real life you would run in fear from my hideousness before we ever ran into the Catholic thing. re: And yet another reason to be a vegetarian...

That's just gross and disgusting! Ewww, if that happened to me, I would've been scarred for life. I remember finding a piece of rubber in my crepe once but this tops it all.

If you assume the finger got into the chili as the ersult of an accident that happened to one of the food handlers, couldn't you figer the same thing could happen if you bit into a tofu salad sandwich? The tofu has to be chopped by someone. I don't think being a vegitarian necessarily protects you from eating fingers.

However, since tofu doesn't have beaks, claws or an anus, it does protect you from eating those things ground up, compressed and called Nuggets.

Very good point, Orion. re: and yet another reason to be a vegetarian... All fast food chains have a very bad reputation when it comes to storing, preparing food, cleanliness etc.

So if you don't want to eat any fingers stay away from fast food, I would say.

mef, we agree on something? i feel compelled to warn all of broadwayworld to run, don't walk, to the nearest fallout shelter with a transistor radio and plenty of drinking water and wait patiently for the apocalypse as this is clearly it's most obvious sign.

Good point, Orion. Henceforth, I will stick to vegetarian cuisine in which one can easily identify, upon inspection, an offending ingredient. No ground tofu surprise for me anymore.

And when it come fast food, I'm sticking to the fries. And I'm begging you, please leave me with my illusions that they are at least safe, if not healthy, to eat.

re: and yet another reason to be a vegetarian...

iflit, i remember in the movie, The Hitcher, there was a scene where Jennifer Jason Leigh serves up a plate of fries to C Thomas Howell (whatever happened to him?) and as he's shoving them, one by one, into his mouth, he looks down and sees that he's about to shove a dismembered finger into his mouth...

re: and yet another reason to be a vegetarian...

Fun fact about fries and vegitarians: McDonald's used to cook the fries in beef fat. When the vegitarians got upset about this, they switched to vegetable oil, but the taste just wasn't as good. So they spent a couple hundred thousand dollars developing an artificial flavor additive to make the fries taste like they were still cooked in beef fat.
