Ang Lee wins the DGA

Just so you know...

GRIZZLY MAN won for best director of a documentary...I can't think of his name offhand.

re: Ang Lee wins the DGA

So who has that stat at his/her fingertips about the number of times a DGA winner has not foretold the best picture win? Isn't it only 3 out of 17 or some such? Just curious.

FOUND IT: "Only 6 times in 57 years has the DGA winner not won the Oscar..."

re: Ang Lee wins the DGA

It's a little more than three now.

I'm sure we all (probably) remember Rob Marshall won the DGA for Chicago, but the Oscar went to Roman Polanski for The Pianist. I'm guessing, but I think it's more like 5 times now.

Still the odds are in Mr. Lee's favor that he will take home the "little gold guy."

(...and the Oscar too!)

EDIT: Six, it is! I was close.

I don't think this race has a dark horse, or a close 2nd, like Marshall and Polanski. Clooney maybe, but a long shot.I could be wrong.

Polanski wasn't even a dark horse. He was a long shot. And he still won.

Of course, if you talked to any of the voters (which I did---probably about 10 or 12 over the course of the balloting), they ALL voted for Polanski, so it shouldn't have been that big of a surprise.

I agree that there probably won't be a surprise win for Best Director this year. Mr. Lee will win!

Well, then it's a double-happiness day for both Ang Lee and BlueWizard!

re: Ang Lee wins the DGA

Ang Lee is one of the most versatile directors we have going now. I can't even believe this is the same guy that directed "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Sense and Sensibility."

Okay, and "The Hulk."

Now, all he needs is a musical to become the next "Robert Wise" (who IMO holds the title of most versatile director EVER, having directed classic films in almost every genre you can name).

Even though it was obvious that Lee would win, I'm still really happy for them. I'm also thrilled that Grizzly Man got something.

re: Ang Lee wins the DGA

Not being a fan of BBM, I just watched The Ice Storm again and it renewed my admiration for Lee. These characters were so right on, written, directed and acted to perfection. Lee knows how to put a story up on that screen. And the ICE! The juxtaposition of the sadness and disfunction of these people against the also sad but beautiful lighting of the film. I felt myself right there in the moment-the atmosphere he created was so easy to relate to. Stunning.

The director of Grizzly Man is Werner Herzog.

re: Ang Lee wins the DGA

I would even say that Ang Lee has a better chance at winning the Oscar than he had for the DGA, considering he picked up the DGA just six years ago while many in the industry felt he was robbed the Oscar for CROUCHING TIGER.

Thanks for the good thoughts, PalJoey! re: Ang Lee wins the DGA
