Angels in America

I feel so incredible that they got the acclaim.

Everyone in that cast deserved to win.
And Tony Kushner's speech was so moving.

This mini-series is one of the greatest works of art of all-time.

But perhaps the greatest thing that will come from all the wins is more people will go buy the DVD, and it will open their eyes to the evils, the hypocrisy, but also the eternal goodness of the world.

Angels in America holds such a special place in my heart, so I cannot even imagine how much it means to a great many of you on this board.

I've wanted to say this for sometime, and I feel that this is an appropriate time to say it. and that is how much I truly admire all of the homosexuals on this board. To be openly gay in our predjudiced, bigoted society takes courage and a sense of being that is truly a gift of God. I admire all of you, and have the upmost respect for the virtues you all hold.

I would add on to that last paragraph but I really couldn't say it better. Amen, Priest. Wonderful post.

re: Angels in America

Well said, Priest. AIA is pure genius. I've never seen anything like it, and probably never will again. All of those awards were incredibly well-deserved.

Couldn't have said it better, Priest.

Yes, I am so happy it won all it did. I have it ordered, i can't wait til it comes!

if only the rest of our society felt that way -- as an openly gay man...thank Priest -- from your post to America's heart and head

The movie was poorly directed and edited, drearily paced, and most of the fantasy sequences did not work at all. Yes, some of the acting was fine but let's keep things in perspective. And just for the record, I find your comments, SticktoPriest, extraordinarily patronizing and condescending in the extreme.

re: Angels in America

Okay, I'll admit it. I didn't think the HBO version of Angels in America was a masterpiece.

*ducks*

Well, it's true. But that doesn't reflect on the play, which I have read and loved.

re: Angels in America

Thank you, SticktoPriest. I found your comments very comforting. People forget that gays and lesbians are still very much in the heat of a civil rights movement. I hope these wins will guide people to seeing the film and coming to a stronger understanding of important questions Kushner's masterpiece raises.

I may be stepping out of my boundaries by posting on this but I also would like to commend all of you for putting yourselves out there, like lambs being lead to slaughter. Todays world just doesn't get it and as straight male I'd just like to let you all know that some of us still have open mind, arms, and heart for you. God bless.

(oh yeah, I LOVE Kushner's AIA. AND The HBO production of it wasn't that bad either.) re: Angels in America

does the resident expert on everything, apparently including human emotions, ever EVER have anything nice to say?

Priest, well said, and i share your emotions on this...

a certain poster won't be able to qualify his post without looking it up in a book somewhere...

Do you walk around with a cloud over your head as well? What a nasty, bitter, ugly post.

re: Angels in America

Marquise, don't waste your time. In all the time I have been posting here and over on Broadway.com, MusicMan has never had a nice word to say about anyone or anything. All it ends up doing is rendering his opinion totally worthless.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

re: Angels in America

oh God, Marquise - I have him blocked and you go ahead and quote him!!! (LOL)...I try really hard not to expose myself to his brand of bitterness. And actually, I'm starting to really feel sorry for the guy - I think there's big need for love in his life. Love for himself and those he comes in contact with.

"Finally, I'd like to say when I originally took this journey with this piece, AIDS affected mainly gay men. Now the disease affects African Americans in extraordinary numbers. Sub-Saharan Africa is being devastated by this disease, so I hope that in accepting this I might be inspiration to those actors who want to tell those stories and keep those realities and struggles alive in the public dialogue." -- Jeffrey Wright, supporting actor winner for miniseries or movie for "Angels in America."

re: Angels in America

I'm still warm from the glow of Priest's comment, so much so that even the doom and gloom from "the other poster" can't put me in a bad mood. I saw the plays when they opened on Broadway and was deeply impacted. I felt that same impact when I saw the HBO production. I thought it worked wonderfully.
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

re: Angels in America

Our world would be a much better place to live if everyone were as "extraordinarily patronizing and condescending". Instead, a majority of people seem to be too simple minded to realize when someone is speaking from the heart and trying to promote a positive attitude.

As far as the HBO production of AIA, I felt it lost a little something in the scenery and special effects of a movie. However, that's not to say that it didn't effectively deliver the same message as the stage play. It was a moving work of art. I think HBO did a fantastic job and got this wonderful piece of theater out there to people who may not have had the opportunity to experience it otherwise.
