Not enough vulnerability?
Before Rachel Getting Married, I would have found this ridiculous. But now it seems like...a good idea. Who would you suggest?

The article says she's "dying" to do a movie musical, but why choose this one? It's a bio pic of Garland, where they will doubtlessly use Garland's own singing voice.
They could cast any appropriate actress. It doesn't have to be one who sings. I'm glad she's interested in it, but honestly, if I were her agent, I'd be telling her, "hold out for Wicked. Or at least a musical project where you actually get to sing."

RTFA.
A Tinseltown insider says: ?Anne dearly wants to do a musical and this could be her chance.
'The big attraction is that it really will be her singing, not recordings of Judy. She is determined to do it justice.

Why bother? It's already been done by Andrea McArdle in "Rainbow". Also didn't Jane Horrocks attempt it in "Little Voice"?

Posted: 3/22/09 at 1:24pmI'm heard about this, and I was pretty sure there'd be some freaking out by the guys here. Apparently I was wrong. I'm excited to see if this actualy works out.

Posted: 3/22/09 at 1:27pmI know I would watch. I saw the TV ones with Andrea McCardle and Judy Davis- who was just wonderful and dead on! Anne certainly channeled Julie Andrew's voice on Saturday Night Live so I'd be curious if she could handle Judy's.

I think Sutton Foster would be better. She is a far more experienced and better performer--probably could use her own voice for a lot of it, and the resemblance is there. Anne Hathaway would just play Anne Hathaway in period costume. Again.

"she may have to sacrifice other projects, which include a lead role in a comedy called The Fiance."
Well Kate Hudson just breathed a great sigh of relief. She has been DYING to do The Fiance for YEARS and this might just be her big break! I hope Matthew McConaughey is available to make it with her! Anne is just DUM! DUM, DUM, DUM!

One, Sutton Foster would bring almost nothing in the box-office draw department.
Two, Anne Hathaway is a wonderful actress and if you don't think so then you haven't seen enough of her films.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

The Judy Davis/Tammy Blanchard film was so beautifully done and greatly-acted, I don't think there's a need for another Judy Garland biopic.
I've always thought Hathaway has a strong resemblance to a young Liza Minnelli, so why not do a Liza biopic instead?

I still think Lauren Ambrose would be a great choice for a young Judy Garland; there are some shots of her where the resemblance is strong.
Aside from being a great actor, she's had extensive vocal training. I doubt they'll use an actors voice over Garland's own recordings, but, this could come in handy.

Posted: 3/22/09 at 3:33pmI think Anne Hathaway is a lucky actress. She's good, but there are scores who don't get the breaks.

Anne Hathaway has a pleasant voice with a decent enough tone. Nothing embarrassing.
Judy Garland ... to put it nicely and tactfully ... had something a little bit more than that.

^ agreed with Besty.
However...I can think of a LOT worse choices, and think she really could pull it off.
I actually liked Jane Horrocks' voice. Not so much McArdle...she didn't really sound like Judy...period.

Posted: 3/22/09 at 10:52pmIf anyone makes a movie about trying to reproduce the quality of Garland's singing, it is doomed to fail. If they're looking for an actress who can portray Garland, and can also sing, then Hathaway may be OK. Think about how well Angela Bassett portrayed Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It; that movie wasn't about how well Bassett could reproduce Turner's singing.

There are tricks. John Leguizamo looked tiny as Toulouse in Moulin Rouge. I know he's short, but they made him looked teeeensy.
I like Hathaway. I would definitely go see it, if nothing else.

Looks like not only is Anne going to attempt Garland on screen, but may be attempting her live on stage.
Note to Anne: People will expect your "Over the Rainbow" to be flawless. I mean F-L-A-W-L-E-S-S!!! Don't mess with people's childhood memories of Judy & TWOO.

Or a dyed-in-the-wool fundamentalist practitioner of Judy-ism like PalJoey warning her that his curse will be on her if she deigns to sing ONE NOTE instead of Judy.
