SUMMARY: The Spokane-Review, a newspaper in Spokane, Wash., revealed that the city's conservative Republican mayor -- a gay rights opponent -- used a gay Web site to meet young men.
After a lengthy investigation, a newspaper in Spokane, Wash., revealed that the city's conservative Republican mayor -- a gay rights opponent -- used a gay Web site to meet young men. He initiated sex with at least one young man and offered a City Hall internship to another.
According to the Spokane-Review, Mayor Jim West, who fought pro-gay legislation during his two decades of service in the state Legislature, met a local 18-year-old man in a Gay.com chat room last summer. The two met for dinner and then engaged in consensual sex.
The young man, who requested anonymity, claimed that West, 54, revealed his identity as mayor during their date.
The newspaper's investigation of West, who was elected mayor in 2003, was prompted by the young man's story and by accusations from two men who claimed West sexually abused them when they were boys.
The Spokane-Review hired a forensic computer expert to "help verify the young man's allegations that West was online." The expert posed online as an 18-year-old man named "Moto-Brock," and he chatted explicitly with the mayor about sex over a period of two months using a Gay.com chat room or AOL instant messaging, the paper reported. West also offered the young man an internship in the mayor's office, among other favors.
In an interview with the newspaper on Wednesday, West admitted the two online relationships: "They were both adults, and I was in public office when I dated women in this community." He also said, "I don't want to go into the whole issue, but I wouldn't characterize me as 'gay.'"
About using Gay.com, he said, "I can't tell you why I go there, to tell you the truth ... curiosity, confused, whatever, I don't know."
As a state legislator in 1986, West helped sponsor a bill that would have barred gay men and lesbians from being hired in schools and day-care centers. That same year, he voted to keep the state from giving out pamphlets that explain how to avoid getting HIV, calling the material "something people go buy at dirty bookstores."
In 1990 he supported a bill from the abstinence group Teen Aid that would outlaw any sexual contact for unmarried teens 18 or younger.
"The unfortunate fact is that Mayor West used his power as an elected official to stand in the way of equal rights for gays and lesbians throughout Washington state," said George Cheung, executive director of Equal Rights Washington.
"Equal Rights Washington is hopeful that Mayor Jim West will come to a place of understanding about his own sexual orientation," Cheung said.
West was married for five years in the 1990s, but there were rumors that he dated young men on the side.
"It was the worst-kept secret in Washington politics," Christian Sinderman, a top Democratic consultant, told the Spokane-Review.
Gay.com, which is owned by PlanetOut Inc., said it was unaware of the newspaper using a fake member profile to investigate West.
"We were not told about the investigation, nor did we participate," said Jen Burton, senior manager for member services at PlanetOut.
The child molestation accusations came from two men who claim they were molested by West in the late '70s and early '80s, when he was a sheriff's deputy and Boy Scout leader.
During his interview with the Spokane-Review, West called both accusations "flat lies."

YES! It's so fun to play "Spot the Self-Loathing 'Mo" ain't it?
I know it ain't PC, but I am totally in favor of outing hypocrites like this.
Isn't the Washington Blade still sitting on a huge pile of Republican congressman and aides who are gay? I mean, I'm not one to say "ruin their lives," but when they're actively campaigning to ruin ours, the gloves need to come off.

Windy - I've always been against 'outing' - EXCEPT when it's someone that has the power to affect public policy, like this moron.
as they say on all those LAW & ORDER shows, this man "opened the door" as a witness by his comments and actions about gay issues. He can't then exactly start crying when the press then slams that "open door" of his closet wide and loud.
Agreed. I'm all for a person's private life being private until they make it a matter of public policy to start affecting the private lives of their constituents. Again, that's when the gloves come off.

In Torch Song, Harvey wrote (and spoke) something along the lines of "You ever notice that gay men never sneak out to spend the night with the girls!"
There is nothing non-PC about outing politicos of any stripe who try to get votes over our (sometimes literal) dead bodies. Nothing. Same thing goes for any public figure. If anything it is self-loathing NOT to out them.
Name them all.
i wish he would have IMed me; I'm a 18 year old boy.....
idiot.

I don't know. I'm just glad we don't have any one like that hanging around here.
Hypr: eww. Totally. Eww.
Unless you're looking for a sugar daddy. That said, though, I think there a are a LOT more options on this board. Better quality.
but look at his nice glasses....

West's public policy conflicts with private life
of all the places to go why gay.com? there are better websites then that trash...
I have to agree with the "don't out" unless you are someone who is actively working to harm the community, as this guy was. As many politicians, and religious leaders, are. If they can stand up and claim that the entire homosexual community is degenerative they deserve to be held accountable for their actions.
I despise the hypocrisy.
He must've been really naive to think that this wouldn't get out.
Which ones do you recommend and/or frequent, Cats?
And what's your screen name at these sites?
PJ, it's RevivalCatsNY. He likes to shake it up a bit.
oh he shakes it alright.
You gotta love the screen names Mayor West used: Cobra82nd and RightBi-Guy.
Do all heterosexual Republicans who troll for boys come up with such bad names?
RightBiGuy?
That gets a big "bwaaaaahahahahahahahahahah!"
I live in DC so I'm not gonna trash anyone else's mayor...
PalJoey, I think that GayPolitician69 was already taken.
and I would recommend gayteens.org. it's a support and information site for young people. the exact opposite of gay.com, although, our political friend here is a bit beyond his teen years. which rases another question in my mind. if he is, in fact, gay why is he looking for 18 year old boys and not someone his own age? that's not gay that's borderline pedophile...
