Rowling on 8th Potter Book: "Never Say Never"
Author J.K. Rowling has apparently left the door ajar for an eighth Harry Potter novel. Asked during a BBC interview Friday night about the possibility of reviving the series in the future, Rowling reiterated that her seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, to be published on July 21, will be the last, but she added that her motto has always been "never say never." A spokesman for Rowling said Sunday: "It's not saying that she definitely is [going to write another Potter book], and it's not saying that she definitely isn't. I cannot comment further." Meanwhile, the British bookstore chain Waterstone's launched an online petition Sunday that begins with the words, "We, the undersigned, petition J. K. Rowling to write more new adventures for Harry Potter and his friends no matter what happens at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." And what if Rowling kills off Harry in the final book? Well, the bookstore observed, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes in 1893 in The Adventure of the Final Problem but brought him back to life after a public outcry.

Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia

Does dying and coming back to life like Voldermort count? Cause that is what I see......
There is going to be a Harry Potter Place festival in Soho next week. I'm not in town, but it should be pretty cool

Posted: 7/10/07 at 8:41amAnother Harry Potter book can cover a huge spectrum though, so even if Harry dies, more books can be written. Perhaps about the Marauders and what their time at school was like, or if Ron and Hermione have a child, a story can stem off of that. Or JK can take an obscure character and bring them to the forefront. Endless possibilities, but I don't think I would want another book. Well...it depends on how satisfied I am with DH.

She has (supposedly) considered writing "Hogwarts, A History" as a companion book. It would be kind of fun to read the book that hermione is always quoting. And I like the idea that shiksa_goddess mentioned about writing about the Marauders---but take it a step further and write about Lily's getting the letter all the way up to the death of the Potters.
edit
I don't think that Harry is going to die, though, based on a line from The first book.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 12:45pmSorry kelzama, I wrote the wrong book. In the Sorcerer's Stone, there's a line at the end of the book "in years to come, Harry would..." I can't remember the exact quote, but it struck me more now, since I just finished reading it for the umpteenth time. I'll look for it when I get out of work, and post the exact line.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 12:56pmI thought JKR said years ago that the 7th book was the be-all, end-all?

Am I the only one who thinks it's lame and total bullSH*T if she writes another?
And I love Harry Potter. There was supposed to be 7 books, let there be 7 books.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 2:27pmI think it's fine to limit the series to 7, but that doesn't rule out stories outside of the series. The Hogwarts history is just an example. Lots of stories could come from the post-Hogwarts years.
A click for life.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 2:36pmI would love to read a backstory on Dumbledoor and see how he became such a powerful wizard.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 3:17pmMag, I always think of that line when I am trying to reason out if Harry will live or die, and I always use it to persuade others into believing Harry will not die. It always just jumped out at me.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 3:25pmI agree with wanting to know more about Dumbledore. All we know about him is that, even as a boy, he was doing spells full grown wizards couldn't do. I want to know more about the man!

Posted: 7/10/07 at 4:47pmWell, it seems to me that she ruled out Harry Potter books, but made no mention of other characters, so a Dumbledore book, or a book on the four founders, or "Hogwarts, A History", etc. are within the realm of possibility. I'd like to see her write more, but also write something that has nothing to do with this series---she is an excellent writer.

Uh, I'm a massive Harry Potter fan, and I'm absolutely on tenterhooks for the next film and book, and I have a Quidditch costume, and my wealth of trivia knowledge about the series has been making my co-workers at the bookshop very wary of me...
... but I'm nowhere naive enough to accuse JK Rowling of being an excellent writer.
I categorise her with - and this really upsets people when I say it - Tolkien. She's a got a great big brain that has conjured up this amazing world that has captivated millions of people and filled it with characters we'd really love to know or really love to hate. But her story-telling skills are... somewhat less than ideal. Although a HELL of a lot easier to get through than Tolkien. XD

I disagree (Humbly of course
). If her story-telling skills weren't superb there wouldn't be such a phenomenon with adults and other writers like Stephen King and John Irving who are HUGE fans of the series.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 6:03pmJ.K. did say in an interview that there will be no books that take place at hogwarts before Harry's time. So the idea of a book about the Maruders and Lily, though genious, doesn't seem to be one that would be put into action.

Posted: 7/10/07 at 6:33pmYeah, I had read that interview, but you never know, if she does do another book about the magical world she might renege. Doubtful, but a girl can hope.

She has also said that 7 would officially be the last book. But who knows... Obama said he wouldn't run for president. Circumstances change. She had no idea this would get so big; nobody did.
We'll just have to wait and see what happens. It has been my feeling that Harry would die in the last book, but that feeling wavers from time to time, like now...
