Good lord, what is the matter with these people?!!?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

This makes me upset, especially given his age.

I hate to say this, but I know this country's collective mentality all to well ... and most of you do, too ...

... but this ugly climate is going to escalate very quickly into a deep racial tension between blacks and whites.

Two random killings of innocent, non-provoking white people by young blacks with no ulterior motive evident other than boredom, except the first murder was "random" only in their specific victim, but they had a history of hating and wanting to kill white people (according to their Twitter accounts).

Do I think this is a logical reaction by the public at large? No.

Do I realize that blacks have a long history but also a recent history of being killed randomly by bigoted, bored white people? Yes.

Do I think it matters to many whites who still wish the South had won the Civil War? Not in the least.

I predict this anger will only get worse. It makes me sick.

My anger is at the media - who clearly define the Treyvon Martin killing as racist, but never call the Christopher Lane killing racist - which, by all readings of the twitter accounts of the killers, it clearly was.

Good to know Jess Jackson's reaction is that killings like these are "frowned upon" as opposed to his reaction to Martin's killing of "We need a national investigation of the racial context that led to Trayvon Martin’s slaying. Congress must act."

This is the reason for the widening divide.

Why do certain person(s) invoke Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton in these threads? They don't post here.

Or why do people invoke the name Trayvon Martin when the cases aren't even similar? Unless I missed the part in this case where the kids who committed this crime were never arrested.

Namo, this is exactly what I mean by this odd "us vs. them" comparison going on now. The names "Sharpton," "Jesse Jackson," and "Trayvon Martin" are popping up everywhere with people attempting to connect the dots on either side of widening playing field.

The racial tension is only going to build from this.

These "sports-minded" competitive thinkers will turn "us vs. them" into a race war.

Maybe that's one reason why I always hated competitive sports and reality TV shows (same thing). That's exactly the kind of behavior and mindset they encourage.

erik, people will compare them because one case was seen - rightly or wrongly - as a person defending himself against an attack and being demonized for having done so on a wrongly racial basis.

i read a lot of tweets about how trayvon was an innocent kid preyed upon by a brutal racist killer. it was made into a black vs. white issue of a white man killing an african american boy. and there was widespread outrage.

yes, you can point out the vast differences ebtween the two cases, but what a lot of people see is that there was a huge outpouring of support and attention to the trayvon martin case - the president himself commenting on it. the killer in that case was demonized and pillioried over and over again by national news figures and in the press daily for weeks and months.

regardless of how much attention is being paid to this case, there is not any where near the level of outrage being shown toward the alleged killers by the same figures as those who made george zimmerman public enemy #1.

whether it's right or wrong, whether the cases match in any way. the alleged kilers in this case - which according to the tweets in the chris lane case - were actually racially motivated. that's somethign that was alleged repeatedly against zimmerman and by elected officials. it's not something that is being discussed with any where near the vitriol at the highest levels in this instance.

that's what people see. they see a president who empathized with a person who many saw as a thug now ignoring a truly innocent victim of the same type of thug. i mean c'mon, the wh press secretary pretended the toehr day to have not even heard about this. that in and of itself speaks volumes about the difference between how the cases are seen.

I think the racism, when looked at in the context of a systemic problem built into the foundations of our culture, is in the verdict. You can bet these alleged murderers in these recent cases will not be walking free after their trials, as murderers should not be doing. No one will be sending out the message that this veteran or Chris Lane's life had little value or that their deaths were no big deal. No one is going to rush to any of these perps' aid and say they were defending themselves. That's cultural racism in the US. And certain posters, old and new and "new" pop up in these threads and invoke Sharpton and Jackson as if people who think - to paraphrase Dorothy Day - the problem is the whole stinking system, have invoked those two or have any need to defend them.

The outrage in the Trayvon Martin case started because George Zimmerman was never arrested. Zimmerman never would have been arrested if it wasn't for the national outcry. The Trayvon Martin case was more than a hate crime, it was about institutional racism.
Show me a case where it take months of national outcry for an African American teen to be arrested for murdering a white person and then we'll be comparing apples to apples.

""i read a lot of tweets about how trayvon was an innocent kid preyed upon by a brutal racist killer. it was made into a black vs. white issue of a white man killing an african american boy. and there was widespread outrage""

the whole black vs white thing in this case was mindboggling. Zimmmerman is Hispanic. it was the media who cooked it up to see papers and get ratings.

Exactly papa. Nobody here defends that stuff yet a certain stripe of poster always seems to demand that another stripe of poster renounce a Sharpton or a Jackson before daring to comment on race in the US.

Let's stick to the case at hand! This old thug was sitting behind the wheel of a several-thousand-pound weapon, threatening all who went past. Clearly, those kids had no choice but to "Stand their ground" and pre-emptively take out this menace.

No one wants to face facts: this guy was a trained killer, with a strong history of violence. He was waiting for a women to emerge from the building- was he going to rape her? Kill her? Buy drugs from her? Almost definitely.

Thank God those young heroes had the courage to do what needed to be done.

i never said it was right, i was just explaining why it was happening.

the people who are upset only remember the protests. not necessarily why there were protests. they remember the outrage. not necesssarily why there was outrage.

NBC editing that tape to make it look like GZ was racist was a big part of flamming the fires, and the President saying he looked like his son if he had one was also a big factor

Papa, wouldn't you say another difference was the zeal with which the victim was demonized? The "He deserved it" or "well he shouldn't have dressed like a thug" that eventually became sheer joy that someone, somewhere finally had the balls to gun down one of them damn dirty apes?

another #19

And Papa, George Zimmerman never indicated he was "under attack" until he needed a defense strategy- if you listen to his call to 911 he was tailing a suspect- following a goon who didn't belong in his neighborhood. He disregarded the instructions to leave him alone and wait for the police and approached the "suspect."

i think that case was a clusterf*ck, joe. go read jeralyn merritt's accoutns of the case from the very beginning on talkleft.com and you'll come away with a very different view of things, i think.

yes, the victim was demonized, but i think that was a reaction to him being lionized.

it's like the lz granderson piece that byron posted that talks about the fact that nobody wants to admit that their kid might not be perfect.

the trayvon case was seized on and exploited and i don't think any side came out of it looking very good.

The other factor causing the outrage with Martin and Zimmerman was the police initially seeming to shrug off the killing.
