Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment Re-introduced

Yep! The Marriage Protection Amendment (which defines marriage as only between a man and a women) was re-introduced in the Senate today. Anyone else hear about this? And is anyone else frustrated beyond belief?

re: Marriage Protection Amendment Re-introduced

I personal hate saying I live in a country that can stoop so low as to come up with a rediculous thing like this...but...As much as I hate it being re-introduced, I personally feel it won't get anywhere. I think it will just become a dead issue. These stupid anti-gay people just need to get it out of there systems. And even if it were to get amended, I highly doubt it would last very wrong. It goes against EVERYTHING our country says. But I will say, even though I don't think it will get anywhere, I hate having to even hear about it. It makes me want to throw-up...aarrgghh...

Cats, that brings one of my favorite AinA quotes to mind.

"The cracker who wrote the national anthem knew what he was doing. He set the word 'free' to a note so high nobody can reach it"
"One no longer loves one's insight enough once one communicates it."

The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

re: Marriage Protection Amendment Re-introduced

I'm not surprised by this at all, it frustrates me beyond belief to know I'm living in this country that's supposed to be all "free" and "rights for all" but yet, the sweet, innocent gays (amongst other minorities) have it so hard here. Ironic how this pops up right after a certain inaguration of a certain someone...

As if it's not bad enough that the amendment has been re-introduced, guess who's responsible for that? Marilyn Musgrave, a COLORADO senator. Colorado: Home of James Dobson and Marilyn Musgrave.

don't forget the "illustrious" Wayne Allard, the other co-sponser of the amendment, also a CO senator. Is there something in the water out there?

I'm confused. I thought Bush said recently he wouldn't sign the Amendment?

even if congress (both house and senate) were to pass it by a 2/3 majority as required (which would mean that 57 or 58 democrat reps ok'd it and 11 or 12 democratic senators ok'd it give or take the token single independent in each branch) it would still need to go to the states for ratification where it would need to to pass in 38 states (the constitution calls for 3/4 of the states which is 37.5, i rounded up which i think they would do here even though the gop would try to round down) via either the state legislatures or a ratification convention. the president has no place in the process other than, in an ironic throw back to his harvard days, as a cheerleader.

Ah--ok. I wasn't sure if the President had a step in the process.

From HRC:

"The news broke early this morning: Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) is reintroducing the Marriage Protection Amendment (MPA) on the Senate floor today – making it one of the first items of business in the first full week of President Bush’s second term.
In light of the many serious issues that our country is facing, it is absolutely outrageous that a small group of right-wing Senators would make discriminating against GLBT people their TOP priority right now. "

Do it, Beaverhausen. If more people came out and said stuff like that, maybe the fundamentalist Right would decide to fund their war instead of ransack their country.
And, Broadwayguy2, speaking as a Christian who feels like his beliefs' good name has been dragged through the mud for the last four years, lookie here:

See...here's the thing. I truly, in my heart of hearts, don't think Bush believes in any sort of Amendment. At all. I think he could really care less if gays and lesbians get married. If he cared so much, why back away from it when he has a supposed 'mandate.'

He just played politics. But now, politics is coming to bite him in the ass. The religious right it threatening to withhold support of his Social Security plan if he doesn't actively try to ban same-sex marriage.

Believe me, if this Amendment somehow comes to pass, I'm heading for Canada. And I don't say that lightly. Once you start enshrining discrimination in the Constitution, it's not a far road to complete dehumanization and untold violence.

Wasn't it just two weeks ago that Bush said that although he believes in the amendment, he wouldn't go all out to make it happen?

Bush just played the right cards to win him the election.
