I was mugged years ago, by the Delacort theater in Central Park, the same type of in-your-face approach, people walking their dogs 25 feet away. Dusk. They count on the stun and immediate action. If I look back on it, I could've just taken off. But the deer in the headlights thing kicks in. I had a fascinating end--two hours later, someone brought my wallet to my door (I lived on 86th at the time.) Everything was intact, even fortune cookie fortunes, excpet for 18 bucks.
More recently, circa 2001, I was accosted on West End with a scam/extortion type of mugging -- anyone know this: Someone bumps into you, then supposedly drops "expensive reading glasses" that are shattered and starts screaming at you to give him money to cover them. They are typical drug store specs of course, and the shattered look has been done with a hammer. This actually happened to me twice. Just walk away, and quickly. Don't engage.
